Christopher Nolan made history recently with The Odyssey, becoming the first film in history to be shot entirely in 70mm IMAX film. But this wasn't the first time his films were shown on IMAX screens, as his other work, likeOppenheimer, had been shown in that large-screen format. After years of filmmaking, one of Nolan's older works is getting a theatrical re-release, now via IMAX 70mm.
Nolan began his career in 1993, and since thenhe has made 13 feature films, with The Odyssey being his most recent success, becoming his highest-rated film with critics and grossing over $246 million worldwide during its opening weekend. Alongside original projects, like Interstellarand Inception, Nolan also has his name tied to DC projects, including TheDark Knight trilogy. He was a producer for multiple Snyderverse DC films like Man of Steel, Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League(both the 2017 version and Snyder cut).
One of Christopher Nolan's earlier films is The Prestige, released in 2006. Starring Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine, and Scarlett Johansson, the film follows two rival magicians whose obsession with creating the greatest illusion fuels a dangerous feud as they sabotage each other's acts, resort to violence, and attempt to uncover the secret behind each other's tricks. The Prestige made over $109 million worldwide, but that number could change as Nolan revealed in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter that The Prestige will have an IMAX re-release, shown in 70mm as the movie celebrates its 20th anniversary:
"I’m thrilled that they’re going to re-release The Prestige because it’s one of his most underrated performances. I’m just really excited to bring it to fresh audiences. We’re actually going to do 70 millimeter blow-ups. Wally Pfister shot it anamorphically on 35 millimeter, and he did an incredible job. I screened a 35 mil print the other day to check it, and his photography is just extraordinary. Nathan Crowley’s production design is amazing as well. So it’s going to look absolutely beautiful blown up to 70 millimeter, and we’re going to start that process in the next few weeks."
Is 'The Prestige' Worth Watching
The Prestige was highly praised by fans and critics alike, earning a 76% Certified Fresh Critics score and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a 4.3-star rating on Letterboxd. Critics described The Prestige as "obsessive and almost satanic," a "brilliant" period drama that "looks modern," and "great entertainment." Others described The Prestige as "gripping" and "suspenseful" and praised Jackman and Bale's performances. Meanwhile, audiences claimed The Prestige is their favorite Nolan-directed project, that it's full of "stunning twists and thrills," and could be one of the filmmaker's "greatest films".
