Forget Reacher, because a new action icon just exploded onto Prime Video. The streaming service is home to several big action franchises, including Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Invincible, the recently concluded The Boys, and, of course, Alan Ritchson's Reacher. But Prime Video's next big action series was recently released. As well as giving Reacher a run for its money in terms of action, it's also rivaling the hit action thriller on the streaming charts to become one of the biggest shows on streaming right now.
After debuting on Jul. 15, Prime Video's Ride or Die is currently the biggest series on the streamer. The action thriller stars Ted Lasso's Hannah Waddingham as Whiptail, a John Wick-esque assassin at risk of being sidelined by her agency. When a job goes wrong, she's forced to go on the run. But her best friend, the wife of a notable British MP, is caught up in the commotion and must flee with Whiptail to learn who set them both up. It's a suave and action-heavy series, filled with well-choreographed shootouts, snappy dialogue, and big laughs. Alongside Hannah Waddingham, it also features the talents of Octavia Spencer, Ed Skrein, Calam Lynch, Bill Nighy, and Sylvia Hoeks. No wonder it's a global streaming hit.
At the time of writing, Ride or Die is the biggest series on Prime Video in the US. In fact, it's the biggest movie/show overall on Prime Video, even beating the recently released Project Hail Mary. On the TV charts, Elle has been pushed down to second, while the R-rated drama Off Campus is in third. Ride or Die has also become a worldwide hit, ranking third on Prime Video's global charts.
'Ride or Die' Is a Near-Perfect Action Series
Ride or Die isn't just a sensation on the streaming charts; it's also a critical hit. Critics got their hands on the show a few days before its streaming debut on Prime Video, and the reviews teased an exceptional action series. The show holds a near-perfect 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Only 50 user reviews have been submitted to the aggregate site so far. But Ride or Die still holds a decent 84% audience rating on the Popcornmeter.
The critics' consensus heaps praise on Waddingham and Spencer's chemistry and performances, reading, "Reveling in the dynamic friendship between Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham, this Ride or Die spy caper maximizes its entertainment, humor, and fun through genuine performances and breezy writing."
Will 'Ride or Die' Ride On for a Second Season?
Ride or Die might have critics and audiences in the palm of its hand, but the series' future remains uncertain. Given that it's an original series, created by showrunner Tessa Coates, Prime Video is understandably waiting to see how popular the series will be before greenlighting a second season. Given that it's number one on the streaming charts and has a tremendous Rotten Tomatoes score, expect a Season 2 renewal announcement to come through any day now.
