Though some fans have criticized the path BioWare has moved down with releases like Anthem, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and Mass Effect: Andromeda, the well-worn road to this modern controversy was full of early triumphs, including one of the greatest and most revolutionary RPGs ever made.
Today, July 17, 2026, is the 23rd anniversary of the original release of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on the Xbox. Taking place 4000 years before the Galactic Empire, Knights of the Old Republic would offer an immersive RPG experience that would go down as a legendary game for its combat, characters, story, visuals, and writing.
Knights of the Old Republic follows a player-created custom character, who can be put down the light side or dark side of the Force with choices made throughout the game, which ultimately lead to one of the most popular video game story twists near the end of the game. Gameplay is split between exploration, command-based combat, and speaking to party members and NPCs.
According to Metacritic, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is sitting at an impressive 94 metascore. Critics praised the game's Dungeons and Dragons-inspired battle system, use of the Star Wars IP, writing, narrative, soundtrack, and characters. The game has often been cited as one of the earliest pieces of video games as an art form, along with games like Silent Hill 2 and Final Fantasy 7.
Knights of the Old Republic was followed by a direct sequel, Knights of the Old Republic 2, though the game didn't see quite the critical success as its predecessor.
In 2012, Time Magazine named Knights of the Old Republic one of the greatest video games of all time, along with several other media outlets.
Since the release of Knights of the Old Republic 2, there have been several attempts by BioWare and other studios to bring the series back. A remake of Knights of the Old Republic was announced in 2021, but the project has had few updates since then, leading many fans to speculate if it has been canceled.
It is still in development, according to Saber Interactive boss Steve Allison and a report by PC Gamer, and is targeting a 2028 release.
A spiritual successor to the Knights of the Old Republic games, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, was announced in December 2025, developed by Arcanaut Studios. No release window or additional information has been revealed yet.
