Crews in Carbondale are repairing a large sinkhole, closing West Main Street until potentially Friday. Repairs aim to ensure long-term stability, officials say.

Crews are working to repair a large sinkhole in Carbondale.

West Main Street is closed west of Hendrick after a sinkhole formed early Tuesday morning in the Colorado mountain town south of Glenwood Springs. City officials said crews are on site and repair work is underway.

The Town of Carbondale said West Main Street will remain closed with a possible reopening on Friday. A detour is in place on Main Street.

The area must be filled and compacted until it is stable enough to support vehicles and, according to officials, the repair will be completed with asphalt so any future movement is easier to identify.
