The Oscar-winning actor reposted an image that read, “Dear Black People: Please do not cheer or root for Argentina…” before making an even more pointed comparison using Jackson’s own character “Stephen” from Django Unchained.
The post went on to claim that if a Black person rooted for Argentina, “this is what you look like,” alongside an image of Jackson portraying Stephen, the loyal house servant in Quentin Tarantino’s 2012 film. Stephen is widely regarded as one of cinema’s most infamous “Uncle Tom” figures.
The term “Uncle Tom,” which stems from Harriet Beecher Stowe’s 1852 novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin, is used specifically as a derogatory label for a Black person who one perceives as valuing acceptance from White society over solidarity with the Black community.
Jackson’s Story exploded onto the internet following Argentina’s 1-0 loss to Spain in Sunday’s World Cup Final and provoked fierce, emotional reactions over both the actor’s message and Argentina’s long-running reputation regarding racism in soccer.

Though Marvel’s “Nick Fury” didn’t add any of his own thoughts beyond resharing the image, the hard-hitting post illuminated longstanding criticism surrounding racist behavior by some Argentina supporters.
That discussion intensified during the World Cup after several incidents involving Argentine fans went viral, including a widely shared livestream featuring content creator IShowSpeed during Argentina’s Round of 32 match against Cape Verde. In the stream, video showed an Argentina supporter racially taunting the YouTube star. That incident alone triggered heavy scrutiny online.
The controversy also conveys concerns that extend well beyond this year’s tournament. According to The Guardian, whenever Argentina and Brazil meet on the soccer field, “at least” one video typically emerges showing Argentina supporters making monkey gestures toward Brazilians. The publication also noted that similar incidents date back more than a century, including a 1920 Argentine newspaper cartoon depicting Brazilian players as monkeys.
More recently, several Argentine tourists have reportedly been arrested in Brazil on allegations of racial insults. Under Brazilian law, these types of incidents constitute criminal offenses. Brazilian journalist Julia Duailibi told The Guardian that while racism remains an issue throughout South America, Brazil’s legal system provides stronger protections than Argentina’s, where racism is not explicitly criminalized.
Jackson’s repost quickly became a flashpoint online.
Many users defended the actor, arguing that his message reflected a pattern of behavior that has repeatedly surfaced around Argentine soccer.

Many Argentine users blasted the actor for what they viewed as an unfair generalization of an entire country.
“I’m Argentinian and this is disgusting,” one commenter wrote.
“Calling an entire country racist is ignorant,” another user said.
Several argued that millions of Argentinians should not be judged by the actions of a minority of fans, while several called on Jackson to delete the post altogether.
