It’s been a rough week for Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark.
She’s been in the headlines frequently for all the wrong reasons.
First, Los Angeles Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar took issue with people calling Clark the face of the WNBA.
“Eleven members of Congress wrote a letter calling Caitlin Clark ‘the face of your league’ — at least they got the marketing department’s talking point right,” Abdul-Jabbar said.
“Don’t get me wrong, Clark is a very good, possibly even a great, player. But calling any one player the face of the league, absent the sort of on-court and cross-platform dominance of a Michael Jordan or a LeBron James, is an insult to an awful lot of great players, starting with A’ja Wilson, who has won three titles and four MVP awards in her first seven years in the WNBA.”
Then, Clark came under fire for criticizing the league’s officiation after she went off on a referee during a game against the Golden State Valkyries days ago — an incident that will likely result in a fine coming her way.
And over the weekend, Clark was assessed her sixth technical foul, which means she has a hefty second fine coming her way as part of the league’s escalating fine protocol — a system that fines players $500 for their first three technical fouls, $1,000 for fouls 4-7, and $1,500 for all technicals over eight.
“Caitlin Clark is facing a $1,000 fine from the WNBA after picking up her sixth technical foul of the season,” Yahoo sports posted on X. “Clark picked up the tech after opposing a no-call on a screen during Saturday’s Liberty-Fever game.”
Clark has been fined a total of $5,200 throughout her WNBA career — $5,000 from accruing technical fouls and $200 for criticizing officials during the playoffs.
