It’s been a difficult season for George Springer and the Toronto Blue Jays. After entering the 2026 campaign with World Series aspirations following last year’s Fall Classic run, Toronto has instead stumbled to a 46-55 record. The Blue Jays have dropped three straight games, including back-to-back losses to the Tampa Bay Rays, leaving them fifth in the American League East.
On the other side of the division, the Boston Red Sox have authored one of baseball’s most remarkable turnarounds. Boston has won an MLB-best 14 consecutive games, the longest winning streak in the majors this season, and sits one victory away from tying the franchise record of 15 straight wins set in 1946. The dramatic surge has transformed the Red Sox into postseason contenders.
Blue Jays Send George Springer to Red Sox in Mock Trade
With Toronto’s playoff hopes fading, The Athletic’s Mitch Bannon recently proposed a deal that would send Springer to Boston in exchange for left-handed pitching prospect JoJo Ingrassia.
Bannon compared the idea to Toronto’s 2024 trade of Justin Turner to the Seattle Mariners, a move that netted the Blue Jays then-No. 29 prospect RJ Schreck. He argued that while a struggling designated hitter wouldn’t command a massive return, Springer’s postseason résumé could still bring back a legitimate prospect.
In Bannon’s proposal, Toronto would receive Ingrassia, Boston’s No. 30-ranked prospect. The left-hander posted a 1.85 ERA in Single-A during the 2024 season and has followed that with a 3.51 ERA, 12.5 strikeouts per nine innings and 4.8 walks per nine across 12 High-A appearances this year.
Bannon also noted that Springer possesses full no-trade protection through his 10-and-5 rights. However, the 36-year-old grew up roughly two hours from Fenway Park, making Boston one of the few destinations that could appeal to the veteran.
Acquiring Springer comes with its risks and rewards. He has struggled offensively for much of 2026, posting a .228 batting average with 10 home runs and 25 RBIs while producing a .692 OPS in 69 games. Given his age and declining production, Boston could determine that surrendering one of its top 30 prospects isn’t worthwhile.
Still, the four-time All-Star offers something few deadline targets can match. Springer owns an extensive postseason résumé and has repeatedly delivered in October throughout his career. The 2017 World Series MVP is also coming off the finest season of his Blue Jays tenure in 2025, when he helped lead Toronto to the World Series.

The MLB trade deadline is set for July 31, giving both clubs just over a week to determine their direction.
Before then, the Red Sox will continue their four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles with a Wednesday doubleheader as they look to extend their winning streak and make franchise history. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays will attempt to avoid a sweep when they host the Rays on Wednesday and Thursday at Rogers Centre. Both teams will then open a three-game set on Friday at Fenway Park.
