Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Kevin Gausman is able to block trades to eight specific teams as part of his contract. He does not have a full no-trade clause, however. While it remains to be seen if Gausman will even be available for a trade, the 46-55 Blue Jays — who are in last place in the American League East standings — will likely at least consider moving him one would imagine. MLB insider Ken Rosenthal shared an update on how Gausman’s limited no-trade clause could impact his trade outlook.
“The eight teams to which Kevin Gausman can block a trade, according to people briefed on his contract: Reds, Brewers, Tigers, Mets, A’s, White Sox, Pirates, Mariners. Most teams likely to be interested are free to acquire him without restriction,” Rosenthal reported Wednesday.
The Blue Jays are struggling. Gausman is emerging as a trade candidate. While he is able to block trades to the eight teams Rosenthal mentioned, the MLB insider also reported that most teams that would probably be interested are not on the list. It seems as if Gausman’s no-trade clause won’t make too much of an impact on the Blue Jays’ ability to move him before the deadline — if that is what they decide to do.

The biggest hurdle may be Gausman’s performance this season. He is a veteran with a proven track record, but the right-handed pitcher has turned in a lackluster 4.51 ERA across 21 outings. At the very least, Gausman does lead the league with 21 starts. Additionally, teams would surely have interest in acquiring a two-time All-Star who recorded a 3.59 ERA just one season ago.
