The Columbus Blue Jackets have secured another experienced piece for their roster, signing forward Danton Heinen to a one-year, two-way NHL/AHL contract for the 2026-27 season. The move was announced by president of hockey operations and general manager Don Waddell, who highlighted Heinen’s versatility and competitive style as key reasons for bringing him back.
"Danton is a competitive and versatile two-way forward who earned increased responsibility after joining our club in a trade last season," Waddell said. "He provides valuable NHL experience and depth to the organization, and we are pleased he will remain a Blue Jacket for the upcoming season."
Heinen, 31, brings a decade of NHL experience to Columbus after appearing in 612 career games with the Blue Jackets, Pittsburgh Penguins, Vancouver Canucks, Boston Bruins and Anaheim Ducks. Throughout his career, the forward has recorded 102 goals, 151 assists and 253 points, while adding 147 penalty minutes, 919 shots on goal and a career plus/minus rating of +35.
The veteran winger has consistently provided offensive contributions throughout his NHL career, posting five seasons with double-digit goals and four campaigns with at least 30 points. He has also gained valuable postseason experience, recording 13 points in 48 Stanley Cup Playoff games during his career.
Heinen joined Columbus after a trade with Pittsburgh during the 2025-26 season and quickly became a dependable option in the lineup. In 33 games with the Blue Jackets, he produced five goals and five assists for 10 points, while recording a plus-six rating and bringing stability to the team's forward group.
Overall, Heinen finished the 2025-26 campaign with six goals and six assists in 46 games split between Columbus and Pittsburgh. His ability to contribute in multiple situations, including both offensive and defensive roles, made him a valuable depth option for the Blue Jackets.
Originally selected by the Boston Bruins in the fourth round of the 2014 NHL Draft, Heinen developed into a productive NHL player after a strong collegiate career at the University of Denver. During two seasons with the Pioneers, he totaled 93 points in 81 games, earning NCHC Rookie of the Year honors in 2014-15 and Forward of the Year recognition in 2015-16.
The Blue Jackets are counting on Heinen's experience and versatility to provide leadership for a developing roster. While his one-year contract offers flexibility, his proven ability to play consistent NHL minutes gives Columbus a reliable veteran presence heading into the new season.
