When Portland Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon laid off 70 people, it drew significant pushback for his frugality. Now, the Blazers owner has made what some call another cheap move by gutting the broadcast team, according to Maury Brown of Forbes.
“After 19 seasons with the Blazers broadcast team, TV analyst Michael Holton has been let go, as well as statistician Tom Haberstroh, former ESPN legend and Blazers’ TV host Neil Everett, and TV host Jamie Hudson. Several other broadcasters’ contracts have lapsed, with deep pay cuts being expected in some places. The status of TV play-by-play man Kevin Calabro and radio play-by-play man Travis Demers is unknown, but both have contracts up for renewal,” Brown wrote.
While the Blazers have struggled mightily recently, the broadcast team was one of the few bright spots. Dundon gave Micah Nori a one-year contract to coach, displaying how tight his pockets were. Notably, fans have called this out, and so have others in the media. Because of his ownership of the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes, some have believed Dundon might relocate the Blazers. Most of this stems from the fact that Dundon has feuded with Portland about arena funding and how to go about this.

Despite winning a Stanley Cup with the Canes, Dundon has not escaped controversy with them, either. After he put his name and his family’s names on the Stanley Cup, many criticized him. So far, it has not been a good start with his NBA team, and firing the broadcast team does not make it better. The Blazers were not available for comment, and there is no indication of who will be the replacements.
