After unanimously winning the Defensive Player of the Year award and leading his team to the NBA Finals in his just third season in the NBAall new NBA 2K27, which launches this fall. NBA 2K made the news official on Wednesday morning.
The Spurs star joins a list of the biggest global NBA stars to be named a cover athlete:
- Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the cover athlete for NBA 2K26.
- Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum was the cover athlete for NBA 2K25.
- Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant was the cover athlete for NBA 2K24.
- Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker was the cover athlete for NBA 2K23.
- Los Angeles Lakers star (then-Dallas Mavericks star) Luka Doncic was the cover athlete for NBA 2K22.
- Then-Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard was the cover athlete for NBA 2K21.

Victor Wembanyama’s strong season
The San Antonio Spurs center finished NBA 2K26 with a 97 overall rating, slotted just one point behind Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic for the top spot. Gilgeous-Alexander and Jokic each finished with a 98 overall rating.
Wembanyama started the season as a 94 overall, which was the ninth-best rating in the game. He’ll surely have one of the best — if not the best — ratings to start NBA 2K27.
The 2025-26 season was a legendary one for Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs’ seven-foot-four star was the league’s top shot blocker for the third season in a row, averaging 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.0 steal, and 3.1 blocks per game while shooting 51.2 percent from the field and 34.9 percent from three.
According to Stathead, Victor Wembanyama became the fifth player in NBA history to average at least 25 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, one steal, and three blocks over a season, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Patrick Ewing, Hakeem Olajuwon, and David Robinson.
Earlier this offseason, Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs reportedly agreed to terms on a five-year, $252 million contract extension. In the reported deal, Wembanyama is said to have left $50 million on the table to help San Antonio try and build a championship contender.
Victor Wembanyama is now signed for the next six seasons at $269 million. Wembanyama will earn an estimated $43.5 million in the first year of his extension and an estimated 57.4 million in the 2031-32 season, the final year of that deal, which is a player option.
Alongside Victor Wembanyama, NBA 2K has also announced that Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark and former MVP Derrick Rose will also be gracing the covers of NBA 2K27 this year. Clark will be on the cover of the Deluxe Edition while Rose will be on the cover of the Ultra Edition,
