Just weeks after its release, Brooke Averick's debut novel is already becoming one of the books readers can’t stop talking about.
Phoebe Berman's Gonna Lose It is currently ranked No. 34 on Goodreads' "Most Read Books This Week" list, placing it alongside bestselling titles from some of the biggest names in contemporary fiction. Published earlier this year, Phoebe Berman's Gonna Lose It marks the fiction debut from podcaster, comedian, and content creator Brooke Averick, who is known to many fans online as Lady Efron.
The romantic comedy follows 29 year-old Phoebe Berman, a hopeless romantic whose severe intimacy anxiety has left her approaching her 30th birthday as a virgin. Determined to change that, she creates a 30-day plan to finally lose her virginity, only to discover that finding love may require confronting herself first.
"I think we went through a really amazing era where we had really sexually empowered, confident female leads, which is amazing, and I love reading about them," Averick told Audible. "But I also can't relate to them, necessarily. I am somebody who's really anxious when it comes to dating and I'm not confident in that area, and I was waiting for that character to come along. Then it just got to a point where I was like, 'Oh, I'm going to write it myself.' And so that's how Phoebe was born."
The novel has resonated with readers thanks to its blend of sharp humor, romance, and candid discussions about anxiety, vulnerability, and self-acceptance. While the premise is comedic, the story also explores the pressures of adulthood and the expectations people place on themselves, giving it emotional depth alongside its laugh-out-loud moments.
"I wanted to explore this idea of someone who's really, really successful, but just kind of struggles in this one aspect," Averick told People. "It also just speaks to that your life can be really full outside of romantic love, and there's a lot of love that make up love stories," she says. "They don't all have to be romantic."
Rather than centering on someone whose entire life is falling apart, she envisioned a successful woman with supportive friendships and a fulfilling career who simply struggles with one deeply personal obstacle.
The novel's popularity has also extended beyond Goodreads. Shortly after publication, Netflix announced plans to adapt Phoebe Berman's Gonna Lose It into a feature film, with Averick serving as an executive producer. The adaptation will be written by Sarah Heyward, though casting and a release date have not yet been announced.
Its appearance on Goodreads' "Most Read Books This Week" list is the latest sign that the novel continues to find new readers. Landing at No. 34 among the platform's most-read books, Phoebe Berman's Gonna Lose It has quickly established itself as one of the summer's breakout romances and an impressive debut for an author making the leap from internet personality to novelist.
