Robert Best is returning to Port Wenn! TV Insider has learned that Martin Clunes, who played the central doc of Doc Martin on which this series is based, will be back as the father of Josh Charles‘ Dr. Martin Best in Best Medicine Season 2.
Clunes guest-starred in Season 1 Episode 9, “Doc Martin,” during which Martin brought up the fact that they never talked about what happened to his sister, Rosemary, who died. “I can’t remember the last time you said my sister’s name,” Martin pointed out. “I cannot and will not talk about her,” Robert said in their final conversation of the episode. But that’s going to change in Season 2, which premieres on Tuesday, September 22.
When Clunes’ Robert returns, “he’s going to be sort of, I think, hopefully trapped in an uncomfortable evening with a bunch of crazy townspeople. But at the same time, he will be going through his own troubles. So, he will be a little off balance, but of course, he won’t admit to it,” showrunner Liz Tuccillo told TV Insider on the set of the cozy dramedy.
“And then at the end of the day, he and Martin will go even a little bit deeper with their relationship and with the past and with Rosemary, the sister that passed away,” she continued. “So, it’ll be an opportunity to go to have much more hilarity with Martin Clunes, but also to go sort of deeper emotionally.”
Added executive producer Rodney Ferrell, “Last season, you saw that there was this thing like, ‘I’m not going to talk about Rosemary. I’m not talking about my daughter, don’t want to do it.’ There’s such unsaid things for both of them about grief and fault, and we’re going to go there this time when they come because I think it’s a lot of what is holding Martin back from things is never having dealt with this. Same thing with his father. So I think we’re going to try to explore that with the two of them.”
Charles had yet to read the script for Clunes’ return, but he does have an idea for what he’d love to see for father and son. “I just wanted them just to be together a little bit. I would’ve loved a road trip or something that put them in a car together and have to be forced with each other and have to deal with something that would kind of, just by their environment, force them to have to confront each other,” he told us. “But I’m sure it’ll be something that’ll be silly and funny and also probably have some heart to it.”
Robert’s return also has to mean more with his sister, Sarah (Annie Potts). “There’s the real serious, emotional elements, and then emotional elements that we handle a little bit more with comedy. I think Sarah is going to be less forgiving. And I think she might still be holding a little bit more of a grudge, and we’re going to handle that. It’s still going to go to a real place, but I think the comedic part will be handled more on that side of it,” Ferrell said.
