Husbands Ben Platt and Noah Galvin are both in London, appearing in separate stage shows.

Although Ben Platt has won a clutch of awards for his acting work, he’s rarely taken on gay roles on stage. However, he’s currently in London, making his major debut in the city, in a new musical called Midnight At The Never Get.

In the show, at the Menier Chocolate Factory, Platt plays a lounge singer recounting falling in love with his accompanist in a 1960s dive bar.

Promoting the show, Platt sat down this week for a chat with The Independent. He says that he came out to his parents at the age of 12.

They were not entirely shocked by his revelation.

“My parents tell me that they always knew,” he recalled. “I mean, I asked for a fog machine for my seventh birthday. And then – at eight or nine – I asked for clip-on microphones. I asked for my own trash cans because I loved Cats. I think I asked for a boombox.”

He wanted the fog machine for his own bedroom production of Cinderella.

“You know when she transforms from Cinderella-in-rags to Princess Cinderella? I really needed fog for that.”

Platt is the son of film and theater producer Marc Platt and philanthropist Julie Platt. Born in 1993 and raised in Beverley Hills, he landed his first professional role at the age of 10 in a tour of Caroline, or Change.

He worshipped Judy Garland and later appeared in productions of The Sound of Music (2016) and The Book of Mormon (2012-2015). His breakout role was originating the title role in Dear Evan Hansen (2015–2017).

He has won Tony, Grammy and Emmy awards.

A huge Stephen Sondheim fan, Platt is also among the cast of Richard Linklater’s big-screen adaptation of Merrily We Roll Along. Set in different periods of time, Linklater, similar to his movie Boyhood, is ambitiously filming it over 20 years. Platt says three of the nine sequences of the movie have been completed. Linklater is looking to finish it around 2039-2040!

Laughing, Platt told The Independent, “I’m very focused on just not dying.”

Noah Galvin

Platt met fellow actor Noah Galvin in 2015. Galvin took over the role of Evan Hansen following Platt’s departure.

They were friends for five years before finally deciding to get together as a couple just before the pandemic struck at the start of 2020. They ended up spending the first few weeks of this period together in isolation, cementing their romantic relationship.

However, they first hooked up before then. Speaking to Jesse Tyler Ferguson on his Dinner’s on Me podcast in 2024, Platt said he and Galvin were first drawn to each other while workshopping the musical Alice by Heart in 2019. To work through their mutual attraction to one another, Platt says they’d “go to the stairwell during break and make out.”

Platt says this carried on for a couple of months, but he ended it as he worried a romantic relationship might risk ruining the great friendship they’d developed.

They subsequently bonded again in 2020.

In 2023, Platt asked Galvin to marry him during a night out at a restaurant in Brooklyn. They wed in September 2024.

Both men are now in London. While Platt is at the Menier Chocolate Factory, Galvin is appearing alongside How I Met Your Mother’s Josh Radnor in Hit Machine at the Soho Theatre.
