Audi is seriously considering entering the segment of rugged luxury SUVs, and the potential new model would compete with the segment leader, the legendary Mercedes G-Class.
With this move, the German manufacturer would enter a market where it has not previously been present, as its off-road ambitions have mostly been limited to raised Allroad versions.
Back in March this year, Audi confirmed that it was considering developing a new flagship SUV designed for more serious off-road driving.
Design direction already known
Last year, Audi introduced the Concept C, announcing that this design language would define future models of the brand. The first production vehicle to follow this direction is the Nuvolari, powered by an engine from the Lamborghini Temerario.
If the new SUV adopts the same design philosophy, it could look similar to unofficial renderings created for the Kolesa website by designer Nikita Chuyko.
The rendering creator believes that the sharp and straight lines of the Concept C suit a large SUV much better than a low sports car. The visuals suggest similarities with the Lexus GX, featuring emphasized angular lines, narrow LED headlights, a large square grille, and large air intakes.
The rugged appearance is further enhanced by a massive front bumper, underbody protection, large aluminum wheels with off-road tires, and an almost completely flat roofline.
At the rear, there are LED taillights and a spare wheel carrier. Somewhat unexpectedly, the design also includes a rear diffuser, which the rendering creator believes does not fit particularly well with a vehicle of this character.
Scout platform opens new possibilities
If Audi approves the development of this model, one possibility would be using the platform of the revived Scout brand, which is also part of the Volkswagen Group. Such architecture would allow the development of a fully electric version, as well as a range-extender version.
In addition, the new model could inherit some of Scout’s off-road technology, including front and rear differential locks and increased ground clearance.
BMW is also developing a G-Class rival
According to available information, BMW is developing its own rugged SUV under the internal name G74. It is expected to use a modified version of the CLAR platform, which underpins the current BMW X5.
Interestingly, both models could potentially be produced in the U.S. state of South Carolina. BMW would assemble its new SUV at its Spartanburg plant, while Audi could organize production together with Scout in Blythewood.
For now, Audi has not officially confirmed the development of the new model or released any technical details.
