Jose Altuve and the Houston Astros came away with a 5-3 win over the Miami Marlins Tuesday night at Daikin Park in Houston, but not before they got victimized by a rare defensive play by the visiting side.
For the first time in the 2026 MLB season, a triple play happened in a game, courtesy of the Marlins and at the expense of Altuve and the Astros during the eighth inning.
It began when Altuve, who dealt with an injury earlier in the season, grounded into third base with men on first and second. Third baseman Leo Jimenez fielded the ball and then threw it to second baseman Xavier Edwards, who then fired it to Kyle Stowers at first.

That wild play sparked some mixed reactions from fans online.
“Everyone sitting around us was just asking, ‘Wait. What?! Did that just happen??”” a fan said.
“Who needs a magic trick when you’ve got a triple play? The Mets just got schooled in three-point defense,” a social media user on X shared.
“But did they win ? 8 Ls in a row. Yikes. Had people thinking they were legit for a month,” another one commented.
“That triple play was actually insane, I can’t even process how they pulled that off so fast. Absolutely wild stuff from the Marlins fr.,” a different fan said.
“Imagine having adult money on a Houston Astros!” another comment read.
It was a disappointing individual night overall for Altuve, as he went 0-for-4 and dropped to .232 batting on the season. But at least Houston won for the second game in a row and are on the verge of sweeping the Marlins in this three-game series.
