HLOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Sparks returned home from a grueling road trip during which they went 0-4, and while they showed fight and grit during those losses, they just didn’t have enough in the tank with All-Star guard Kelsey Plum still sidelined due to injury.
The Sparks have one more game before the All-Star break as they host the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday, and Kelsey Plum was ruled out on the injury report as she continues to rehab from what’s only being described as a lower leg injury. During the team’s final practice before the break, head coach Lynne Roberts was candid when providing updates on Plum’s potential return.
“I’m not trying to be evasive, we really don’t know,” Roberts told a small group of reporters. “It’s one of those injuries that the muscle, soft tissue, injuries like that, you can’t just jump back out there. You have to build up the tolerance and build up the load so that she can sustain the intensity of it. So we’re in that build-up stage. But I have not been given a date as to when I can count on doing that.”

Plum originally sustained a right ankle injury during Sparks’ practice back on May 26. She was ruled out for three games before making her return on June 5 in a loss to the Dallas Wings. She played in five consecutive games, during which the Sparks went 3-2, before being sidelined on June 17 with a lower left leg injury.
That’s the injury that Plum is currently rehabbing from, and it’s kept her out of nine of the Sparks’ last 10 games. The single game she played during that stretch was June 21 against the New York Liberty, a game in which she was clearly hindered in her movement due to the injury.
Plum was recently selected as a reserve for the All-Star Game this weekend, and while she hasn’t officially been ruled out, it’s difficult to envision her playing.
Prior to the injury, she was in the midst of a career year. She was averaging a career-best 23.9 points, and was leading the WNBA in scoring at one point. She was also grabbing 2.2 rebounds, dishing out 6.4 assists and coming up with 1.2 steals in a little over 34 minutes.
She’s shooting 52.7 percent from the field, 38.3 percent from the 3-point line and 80.6 percent from the free-throw line. Her field goal efficiency is a career-high as well.
The Sparks initially acquired Plum in the 2025 offseason via sign-and-trade in a multi-team deal that also involved the Las Vegas Aces and Seattle Storm. She made the All-Star team in her first season with the franchise, then re-signed on a one-year contract this past offseason.
