The person wanted for a murder nearly six years ago in Landover is finally in custody.
According to Prince George's County Police, the deadly shooting happened in the 3200 block of 75th Ave. on Oct. 27, 2020.
When officers arrived, they found 22-year-old Andre Lamont Cox Jr., who had been shot; he died a short time later.
Investigators identified 34-year-old Dayvon Gordon as one of two suspects accused of killing Cox. The second suspect was arrested shortly after the shooting.
Since Cox was killed, detectives have worked to find Gordon. Back in June, police told WUSA9 they believed someone was helping him evade arrest. Authorities offered a $10,000 reward for information in the case.
On Wednesday, authorities announced that Gordan had been taken into custody in D.C.
“In addition to our tremendous law enforcement partners, the PGPD is also appreciative of members of the media and the community for assisting us by sharing information on our years-long search for Gordon. It took each component to finally bring this murder suspect into custody. Hopefully this arrest brings some comfort to Andre’s still grieving family,” Prince George's County Police Chief George Nader said in a press statement.
Cox Jr.'s parents, Andre Cox, Sr. and Shekita Robinson, were on hand for the arrest announcement. Robinson expressed gratitude to the detectives who saw the case through for nearly six years.
"I have to say from the depths of my soul: Thank you," Robinson said Wednesday. "My son will be able to rest at peace."
County Executive Aisha Braveboy praised the investigators on the case and thanked the parents for their patience, and said the job is not over following Gordon's arrest.
"No case in Prince George's County is ever cold," Braveboy said. "What we have to focus on is getting justice."
Andre Cox, Sr. echoed that sentiment during Wednesday's press conference.
"Today is a great day you all, but the job is not done. The fight is only beginning. Justice will be served for us and the family when we get a conviction," he said.
Gordon is charged with first and second degree murder and related charges. He remains in custody in Washington, DC, pending extradition to Prince George’s County. The motive for the murder remains under investigation.
