Prime Video's new action thriller adaptation is the perfect replacement for those missing the mystery and drama of Reacher, which is inspired by Lee Child's Jack Reacher series of novels. The Gatekeeper Will Be Prime Video's Next Best Action Thriller
Deadline reported in early July 2026 that Matthew Michael Carnahan, the writer behind the likes of World War Z, Deepwater Horizon, 21 Bridges, and more, will be directing The Gatekeeper, a new action thriller movie for Amazon MGM Studios and Di Bonaventura Pictures. The Gatekeeper will also be taking inspiration from a thriller novel series that kicked off with New York Times bestseller James Byrne's The Gatekeeper in 2022 and continued in 2023's Deadlock, 2025's Chain Reaction, and 2026's Storm Warning.
These stories follow Desmond “Dez” Aloysius Limerick, a retired operative with a shadowy past of military and intelligence work, who inadvertently saves a reporter's life and becomes embroiled in a vast conspiracy that could fracture the United States itself. In Prime Video's hands, The Gatekeeper has the opportunity to become the next major action thriller event, even perhaps surpassing the success of Reacher, which follows a very similar storyline with Alan Ritchson in the driver's seat.
Little is known about Prime Video's upcoming The Gatekeeper adaptation, including which emerging action star will take the lead role of Dez Limerick. However, by pairing a top-tier creative team with a charismatic, unconventional hero that perfectly complements the streamer's highly successful Reacher universe, Prime Video has something special with The Gatekeeper. While Matthew Michael Carnahan will be directing, Brian Helgeland (LA Confidential, Mystic River) has penned the script, making The Gatekeeper a sure success.
