Prime Video's new action thriller adaptation is the perfect replacement for those missing the mystery and drama of Reacher, which is inspired by Lee Child's Jack Reacher series of novels. Following the mixed reception of the previous adaptation, which saw Tom Cruise portray Jack Reacher in the eponymous 2012 movie and the 2016 sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Prime Video earned exclusive streaming rights and ultimately debuted Alan Ritchson as Jack Reacher in February 2022.
Each season of Reacher adapts a different book from Lee Child's Jack Reacher 30-strong novel series: Season 1 is based on 1997's Killing Floor, Season 2 on 2007's Bad Luck and Trouble, Season 3 on 2003's Persuader, and the upcoming Season 4 on 2009's Gone Tomorrow. The Prime Video series has received critical acclaim throughout its run, but the same gritty kind of action and detective thriller vibes will soon be replicated in yet another high-octane Prime Video project.
The Gatekeeper Will Be Prime Video's Next Best Action Thriller
Deadline reported in early July 2026 that Matthew Michael Carnahan, the writer behind the likes of World War Z, Deepwater Horizon, 21 Bridges, and more, will be directing The Gatekeeper, a new action thriller movie for Amazon MGM Studios and Di Bonaventura Pictures. The Gatekeeper will also be taking inspiration from a thriller novel series that kicked off with New York Times bestseller James Byrne's The Gatekeeper in 2022 and continued in 2023's Deadlock, 2025's Chain Reaction, and 2026's Storm Warning.
These stories follow Desmond “Dez” Aloysius Limerick, a retired operative with a shadowy past of military and intelligence work, who inadvertently saves a reporter's life and becomes embroiled in a vast conspiracy that could fracture the United States itself. In Prime Video's hands, The Gatekeeper has the opportunity to become the next major action thriller event, even perhaps surpassing the success of Reacher, which follows a very similar storyline with Alan Ritchson in the driver's seat.
Little is known about Prime Video's upcoming The Gatekeeper adaptation, including which emerging action star will take the lead role of Dez Limerick. However, by pairing a top-tier creative team with a charismatic, unconventional hero that perfectly complements the streamer's highly successful Reacher universe, Prime Video has something special with The Gatekeeper. While Matthew Michael Carnahan will be directing, Brian Helgeland (LA Confidential, Mystic River) has penned the script, making The Gatekeeper a sure success.
Helgeland won his Oscar for LA Confidential back in the 1990s, while Carnahan's directorial debut, Mosul, premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2019 to critical acclaim. This talented and experienced team ensures a gritty, blockbuster-quality visual and storytelling experience for The Gatekeeper, with a hero relying on sharp wit and quick agility, once again implementing the fresh but familiar drifter-turned-hero formula that has worked for Prime Video in the past.
The Gatekeeper Will Expand Prime Video's Reacher-Style Action Franchises
Reacher isn't the only high-octane and action-packed thriller series boasted by Prime Video. In fact, over the last few years, Prime Video has established itself as one of the most qualified platforms to produce shows and movies in this field. Alongside Reacher, which has skyrocketed Alan Ritchson to action-star fame—with many now favoring him as the DCU's new Batman- Prime Video has delivered several other similar projects that prove The Gatekeeper will be one to watch.
Among them, military thriller The Terminal List stars Chris Pratt as US Navy SEAL Lieutenant Commander James Reece, who seeks to avenge the murder of his family, while Reacher itself is about to receive its own spinoff, Neagley, with Maria Sten reprising her role of Frances Neagley, who seeks the truth after an old friend's suspicious death. Neagley is set to premiere on Prime Video on September 16, 2026, only a month after the next season of Reacher.
Similarly, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan starred John Krasinski as the legendary CIA analyst over four seasons released between 2018 and 2023, which was followed up with a feature-length adventure in 2026 with Jack Ryan: Ghost War. The seven-season-long Bosch featured Titus Welliver as LAPD detective Harry Bosch, who embarks on various investigations, while Aldis Hodge stars as Washington, DC detective and forensic psychologist Alex Cross in Cross, and Michael B. Jordan took on the role of US Navy SEAL John Kelly in 2021's Without Remorse.
Prime Video Audiences Have Proven Their Desire for Action Thrillers
Record-breaking viewership figures for the likes of Reacher, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, The Terminal List, Bosch, Cross, and more have proven that Prime Video audiences have a huge appetite for military-style thrillers, setting The Gatekeeper up in good stead. Series in this genre consistently dominate streaming charts and are perfectly built for the platform's core demographic, which has urged Prime Video to turn rugged, tactical action stories into a staple of its programming.
Most of these successful projects have been built on faithful book adaptations, which have culminated in the live-action adventures shown in Reacher, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, and more. Fans of the books eagerly tune in to watch their favorite heroes fight on screen, and the same will take place when The Gatekeeper finally releases. Additionally, Prime Video viewers seem to prefer realistic tactical combat over sci-fi or fantasy battles, while this specific formula has built multiple multi-season franchises and spin-off projects for the streamer.
The Gatekeeper's adaptation fits perfectly into this delicate ecosystem. As Amazon's newest action franchise, The Gatekeeper is designed to complement massive hits like Reacher, The Terminal List, and more. While Reacher thrives in episodic TV, The Gatekeeper will be getting the big-screen treatment, which will allow Amazon to expand its action thriller cinematic universe simultaneously across both mediums for years to come.
We don't yet know when The Gatekeeper will land on Prime Video, as the movie has only recently been announced. With Amazon treating the project as a major new action-thriller property designed to echo the massive global success of hit series and movies in the same vein, however, The Gatekeeper promises to be another huge title for the studio. The Gatekeeper is in early production, so no official release date or cast list has been announced yet.
