A cult film is being adapted as a series: Amazon's streaming service Prime Video has ordered a new version of 'RoboCop', as can be seen in an official Instagram post. The streaming service has commissioned the production of a first season consisting of eight episodes, as also reported by the US industry magazine 'Variety'. A release date has not yet been set.
The official synopsis sounds familiar yet contemporary: A giant tech corporation convinces the city to deploy a heavily armed robot for police duty. Implanted in this machine is the consciousness of a popular police officer who died in the line of duty.
According to 'Variety', Amazon has been working on the material since acquiring MGM studio in 2022. The corporation wants to systematically utilize MGM's extensive rights library for film and television projects. 'RoboCop' is among the best-known brands in it.
Who's behind the new version
Peter Ocko is responsible for the series as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. He previously worked on the HBO series 'The Leftovers', among other projects.
'The Conjuring' creator James Wan (49) is among the executive producers. Also on board is Ed Neumeier (68), one of the screenwriters of the original 1987 film.
Director Wan, also known for 'Saw' and 'Aquaman', describes himself in a statement as a huge fan of the source material. 'So for me, it's a dream to be part of bringing this world to television', Wan continues. 'What Paul Verhoeven created in 1987 was decades ahead of its time, and the questions it raised about technology, identity, and the true interests of corporations have only grown more urgent since then.'
The new series is intended to 'honor the cult status of the original while emphasizing its relevance in our modern, technology-driven world, while simultaneously creating something distinctly new for a global audience.'
From box office hit to massive franchise
The first 'RoboCop' hit theaters in 1987, directed by visionary filmmaker Paul Verhoeven (88). Peter Weller (79) played the law enforcer who is half human and half machine. A reboot followed in 2014 with Joel Kinnaman (46) in the lead role.
The character has already been adapted for television multiple times. Two animated series and two live-action versions were created. In addition, there are video games and comics. Who will play the titular cyborg in the new Amazon series is not yet known.
