George Kittle is aiming for a potential Week 1 return from January's Achilles tear, but ESPN's Adam Schefter believes otherwise.

The fact tight end George Kittle is even in consideration to return for the San Francisco 49ers' regular-season opener down in Australia against the Los Angeles Rams after suffering a ruptured Achilles in the playoffs last January is miraculous.

After all, it wouldn't have been surprising if such a devastating injury completely cut into Kittle's 2026 campaign. But it doesn't appear as if that'll be the case.

Kittle has remained hopeful about potentially returning in time for Week 1's tilt. At the same time, though, both he and the Niners have to be cautious about prematurely returning from such a serious injury. Combine that with the extensive travel across the Pacific Ocean, and it's understandable why there'd be some doubt about his availability against one of San Francisco's chief rivals.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, it sure seems as if both parties are leaning more toward caution than optimisim at this point.

Adam Schefter on George Kittle's return in Week 1: 'I don't think it's a given'

Speaking on his podcast, Schefter acknowledged the optimism and declared the possibility of the All-Pro's improbable return to the field in time for the regular season.

Simultaneously, though, the ESPN insider recognized what most 49ers fans would understand about Kittle's return: It's certainly not guaranteed:

George Kittle's coming back from his injury and he feels like he's going to be ready for that regular season opener in Australia against the Rams. But the 49ers may be very careful, and let's see if he makes it back. I don't think it's a given, just yet.

Kittle, too, recognized he needs to be cautious despite his own optimism. Earlier this offseason, he pointed out how merely the travel to Australia could be an X-factor that potentially denies him the chance to be available for Week 1.

That said, should Kittle merely miss one game because of that devastating injury, it'd still be nothing short of miraculous, and a Week 2 return after such a setback would still be a welcomed development.
