ESPN's lead NFL Insider Adam Schefter took to the mic on Tuesday to address what he believes about the Cleveland Browns quarterback competition.
On his weekly hit with Pat McAfee's Ty Schmitt on the Adam Schefter Podcast, the conversation went to the Browns' quarterback room. While the rest of the world is talking about the top of that room, Schefter talks about the entire room itself.
Adam Schefter believes that when the season kicks off, the Browns will not have four quarterbacks on their roster.
The Browns currently have Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel and Taylon Green all in the quarterback room. There is just no way that the Browns will have all four of those guys on the roster come the beginning of September.
There are two potential trade candidates on the roster, and it is the two second-year players. Gabriel should probably have his apartment packed up for when the inevitable call comes that Cleveland found a trade partner for the young quarterback.
In his first season, Gabriel showed signs of competence. While he severely lacked arm talent, he was a very good decision maker. The ball was safe, for the most part, but he did ultimately look outmatched and overpowered by the NFL game. He finished the year with a 59.5 percent completion rate for 937 yards, seven touchdowns to just two interceptions.
It wasn't all bad for him, and there is a reality where he is a long-term NFL backup quarterback.
If they are unable to find that partner, there is a chance that even Sanders could potentially find himself in some trade conversations. I believe that this option is very unlikely to happen, but it is definitely a possibility.
The other two players on the roster, Watson and Green, are likely safe. The Browns are going to want to hold onto Green as long as they can and really may have some packages for him during his rookie year since he is such an incredible talent.
Watson is simply an immovable asset. He is going to finish the season on the Browns roster, whether fans like it or not.
The obvious and likely move in this room is shipping Gabriel off. However it ends up happening, I don't envision a world where Cleveland carries four quarterbacks into the season. They are going to have to move someone to get the job done.
