Acadian Ambulance urges adult and young cyclists and scooter riders to wear helmets.

As more people ride bikes and scooters, Acadian Ambulance is reminding riders about the importance of wearing helmets.

Helmets have been shown to reduce the risk of severe brain injury by 75% and head injuries by 48% to 60%, according to Acadian.

Acadian said choosing the right helmet is important. Riders should look for helmets that meet safety standards set by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

A helmet should fit snugly, sit level and stay stable. Children are more prone to head injuries because their heads are larger in proportion to their bodies and their coordination is still developing.

Children ages 5 to 14 have the highest injury rate among bicyclists. Bicycle crashes also are a leading cause of death for children.

Parents can encourage children to wear helmets by wearing helmets themselves and letting children choose their own.
