Ed Harris is not happy with his Dutton Ranchrole. Harris plays Everett McKinney, the local veterinarian in Rio Paloma and a Vietnam War Navy vet. But on Monday night, the actor told Variety that he felt "misled" about his role and its importance in the series. Halfway through Season 1, he reportedly told his team to "get me the f**k out of here."
Harris is currently signed on for two seasons of the Yellowstone spinoff, though it's now unclear whether he's looking to stay on the show. Dutton Ranch premiered on Paramount+ on May 15 and has been renewed for Season 2. The series also stars Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, Finn Little, Juan Pablo Raba, Jai Courtney, J.R. Villareal, Marc Menchaca, Natalie Alyn, and Annette Bening.
Ed Harris Felt 'Underused and Inconsequential' in Dutton Ranch
Dutton Ranch was created by Chad Feehan and serves as a spinoff and sequel to Yellowstone. It's currently the fifth television series in the Yellowstone franchise. When Harris was cast, he says he was led to believe his character would have a larger role in the series.
"Prior to signing on for it, I was talked to quite a bit about what the season was and what my character was going to do — and that I was one of the four main characters," Harris told Variety. "And that wasn't really the case."
Instead, the actor says he told the Dutton Ranch team, "I'm feeling underused and inconsequential." Now, he says, "I'm being told my character will have a little bit more to do [in Season 2]. I was just a little frustrated, to tell you the truth."
Harris also talked about a scene that was cut from the show, where his character sings in a bar, saying it "really pissed me off." In recalling the story where his character is asked to take a turn singing, Harris said, "I walk up to the mic, and they cut it. They cut the song out. I'm going, 'F**k you people." Production reportedly told Harris that the scene was cut because it was "too 'up' for the dark ending of that episode."
"That to me was reason enough to say I'm voiding my contract," Harris added.
Dutton Ranch Will Return for Season 2
As of yet, Harris's contract has not been voided, and he also mentioned that despite how it felt during filming, once he watched Dutton Ranch, he thought the show was "pretty good" and that his character was "relatively important to the story." The show as a whole got overall good reviews, with an 89% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, the four-time Academy Award nominee wanted to do more on the series.
Filming for Season 2 of Dutton Ranch has not yet begun, with Harris saying they're scheduled to start filming in February 2027. While Harris is still currently signed on for the second season, it remains to be seen what will happen to his character moving forward.
