Although it hasn't been on air since April, one of this month's biggest TV headlines was stolen by The Pitt. Recently, the nominations for the 78th Emmy Awards were announced, and, perhaps unsurprisingly, HBO's genius medical drama came out on top. With 25 total nominations for its sophomore season, The Pitt is the most-nominated show this year, earning nods in many of the major categories, including a remarkable 13 nominations for the cast.
However, The Pitt isn't the only highlight of a recent impressive run for the medical drama genre, as a beloved Noughties sitcom officially returned for more earlier this year. Of course, we're talking about Bill Lawrence's Scrubs, which returned to plenty of fanfare in February 2026. JD (Zach Braff) and Turk (Donald Faison) were the headline cast reprisals, although they now held the positions of Chief of Medicine and Chief of Surgery, respectively. At a time when so many reboots fail, this was an almighty success, being praised by critics and earning impressive viewing figures.
A Fan-Favorite Has Received a Promotion for Season 2
The return to Sacred Heart became the highest-rated comedy telecast on any network in the 18-49 demographic, and earned over 11 million total viewers across all platforms in its first 35 days. This was more than enough to earn the series a second season renewal, with Braff, Faison, and Sarah Chalke(Elliot Reid) returning as the main trio. However, they are not alone as series regulars, with it now revealed that Ava Bunn, who plays Dr. Sam Tosh, has been upgraded to series regular for Season 2. Jacob Dudman (Asher Green), David Gridley (Blake Lewis), Layla Mohammadi (Amara Hadi), and Amanda Morrow (Dashana Trainor) all return as interns.
John C. McGinley (Perry Cox) and Judy Reyes (Carla Espinosa) also both return for Season 2, with Rachel Bilson taking on a recurring role after making a guest appearance in the Season 1 finale. There's also a big change off-screen, with veteran comedy showrunner Mike Royce on board as executive producer. A logline for Season 2 reads:
"J.D., Turk and Elliot have leveled up from interns to icons at Sacred Heart. Now, the respected doctors inspire the next generation while balancing the ups and downs of working in a hospital. Together with characters new and old, they are navigating this next chapter with laughter, heart and some surprises along the way."
