A woman has ignited a debate on Reddit after sharing how a request from her mother-in-law ahead of a planned two-week stay left her feeling uncomfortable and ultimately led her to remove herself from the situation altogether.
In a post shared on Sunday under the username u/Critical-Echidna7908, the woman explained that her husband’s parents typically visit once a year and stay with the couple rather than booking a hotel.
“His parents would normally come over once a year for two weeks. Don’t want to stay in hotel because they want to be next to their son. We’ve got two rooms,” she wrote.
The arrangement already requires some adjustments. The Redditor said she works from home and has to relocate her office equipment to the living room so her in-laws can use one of the rooms during their stay.
But the issue arose when her mother-in-law made a specific request regarding the family’s dog.
According to the post, her husband’s mother wanted the dog to be sent elsewhere during the visit because she considered it unhygienic.
“His mother particularly requested to have my dog sent away while they live here because she finds it unhygienic. She’d then refuse to sit on the couch because the dog has been up there before,” the woman wrote.
The disagreement became especially difficult because of the dog’s age.
“This happens every year and we’ve have countless arguments. They say I’m unreasonable because it is just two weeks a year. My dog is getting old and I don’t feel good doing that every year,” she said.
The post quickly attracted attention from Reddit users, many of whom weighed in on the dispute and offered advice.
In an update, the woman said she carefully considered the responses before making a decision of her own.
“Hi all, thank you very much for your kind responses. I have read every single one of them and made my decision accordingly after carefully considering all of your advice,” she wrote.
Rather than continue arguing over the situation, she decided to leave before her in-laws arrived. She booked a ticket to visit her parents and arranged for a trusted friend to look after her Shih Tzu during her trip.
The Redditor also told her husband that she had handled arrangements for herself and her dog but would no longer be responsible for preparing for his parents’ visit.
“I’ve told my husband I’ve got myself and my dog sorted out at least,” she wrote.
In a second update, she revealed that the situation had taken another turn after she informed her husband of her plans.
“After mentioning to my husband that I’ll be away with my dog, I totally blocked off my eyes and ears until he got the final decision today,” she wrote.
According to the Redditor, her husband and his parents ultimately decided to stay in a nearby hotel instead.
Despite the change, she decided to continue with her own plans.
“However, I have made the decision that nothing will change on my end. My dog and I will still be proceeding with the trip,” she wrote.
The post resonated with many readers, receiving more than 2,600 upvotes and 912 comments as users discussed family expectations, houseguest boundaries, and the challenges of balancing the needs of relatives and beloved pets.
One user, FabulousPossession73, commented: “I’m honestly not a huge fan of dogs myself, but what she’s asking is completely unreasonable. That’s your animal in your home and that’s a lot of upheaval to move your dog for two weeks. Does MIL understand how costly it is to board a dog? I would tell her she is welcome to stay at your house, but your dog is part of the family and will be staying where he/she is. It’s either that or a hotel.”
