Woman can't afford to book vacation, leaves daughter stunned with request

“She’s never going to listen to you and she’s never going to change. I’m sorry you have an awful mother,” one user said.

A woman’s plan to celebrate her husband’s birthday with a tropical getaway has sparked a family dispute after she made a request that left her daughter frustrated and questioning her financial boundaries.

In the viral post, shared by u/audreyhepburnloverr and titled “Mom wants to use my Klarna for a vacation she can’t afford,” the woman explained: “I turned 20 yesterday and had a nice weekend away from home, and just gotten back to this mess.”

According to the post, her father’s birthday is coming up in September, and her mother wants to take him to Punta Cana. The problem, the daughter said, is that her mother cannot afford to pay the full amount upfront.

The Reddit user explained that her mother once had her own Klarna account but was eventually banned after repeatedly missing payments and allowing late fees to pile up. Because of that, she turned to using hers instead.

“I said she can use it for stuff that she needs but not to go crazy on it because I was conscious of my credit score,” the poster said, adding that she warned her mother not to abuse the arrangement.

However, those boundaries were ignored. The poster said her mother continued making purchases until “too many payments” had built up by Christmas. After repeated warnings, she finally added authentication settings requiring a verification code sent to both her phone and email before purchases could be approved.

“She didn’t listen again so I changed the settings to send a code to both my number and email to verify that I’m making the purchase,” she wrote.

The situation appeared to improve temporarily, with the poster saying her mother reduced her use of the account and instead turned to Clearpay.

Then another clash erupted during a family vacation a few months later. According to the poster, her mother asked her father to request verification codes so she could use a buy-now-pay-later option to cover overweight luggage fees.

The poster said she refused to provide the codes, but the confrontation quickly escalated.

“When I realized what she was doing I said I didn’t get any codes and she came in and screamed at me to send her the codes,” she wrote.

The disagreement did not end there. After returning home, the poster learned that her mother had used a 12-month repayment plan despite being told to stick to shorter payment options if financing was necessary.

“I was so mad at her for this and she promised she would pay off the rest by the end of June (she hasn’t),” she said.

Now, as plans for the Punta Cana birthday trip move forward, the issue has resurfaced. According to the poster, her mother has once again asked to use her Klarna account and insists a 12-month payment plan is the only way she can afford the vacation.

The 20-year-old said she suggested alternatives, including paying over three or six installments, but her mother rejected those options because the payments would be too high.

At the same time, the poster said she has been planning to close the account altogether.

“I’ve been planning to delete my Klarna account for months now,” she wrote.

The conflict has become particularly frustrating because she is also trying to save money for major life goals, including moving out and buying a car—which her mom always dismisses.

“I reminded her once again if she wants to use my Klarna then she can’t use the pay in 12, and her response was if she can’t use pay in 12 then she can’t take my dad on vacation. Guilt tripping much?” she wrote.

“I’m so tired of this. I can’t seem to get her to listen to me.”

The story quickly gained traction on Reddit, where it has received more than 2,400 upvotes and 753 comments, with users weighing in on the family’s ongoing dispute over money, credit and personal boundaries.

One user, StuffonBookshelfs, commented: “You need to put your foot down. Otherwise you’ll be in deep debt for the rest of your life so your mom can have luxuries she clearly cannot afford.”

OkHistory3944 said: “OP needs to check her credit report. Big chance she has loans she doesn’t even know about.”

FriendToPredators added: “She’s never going to listen to you and she’s never going to change. I’m sorry you have an awful mother. It’s tough. Focus on what you can control and stick to that.”
