Buying a home is often daunting, no matter who you are. But some people are looking for something a little … unusual-something actually haunted or a home equipped for storing a Boeing 727 jet or a bright space for an artist and a dark space for a self-described vampire. That's where Houston realtor Noel Collier comes in on the new HGTV show Extreme Buyers Club, where she matches some very particular people to the perfectly unconventional home.
"I'm really excited for people to see that Houston has so many ways of living," Collier told Chron. "Whatever your thing is with real estate, Houston has it to offer." For example, a home for a woman with 40 llamas and a kangaroo, as shown in the premiere episode, or a house with enough water for a professional mermaid.
"I'm a real estate agent because I love to help people," Collier said. "Give me your craziest, your most extreme request. I'm not gonna make you feel bad about it. I'm not gonna make fun of you because that's your extreme request. What I'm going to do is I'm gonna jump in the trenches with you, and I'm gonna figure out how to make your dream a reality."
Collier has been an established realtor in Houston for years, founding her real estate company, Noel Collier Group, in 2019. But it wasn't a simple journey. Collier had her first son as a 17-year-old single mother, living on her own. After attending community college and working as a corrections officer, she enrolled at Texas Southern University, where she got her degree in marketing.
"I've always been like a go-getter, but it goes to the next level when you have a child that you have to provide for," Collier said. "I'm a first-generation college graduate-I'm a lot of firsts in my family-but heavy is the head that wears the crown."
Now a mom of three and married to her college sweetheart, Collier credits that "grit" to getting her where she is today, after years and two other networks initially interested in getting her on TV before HGTV called.
"That is why I also feel like, just through my humble beginnings and through having the experiences that I've had in life, this is now fun," Collier said. "It's work, but it's so much fun because I've been through so many hard things, that this is easy."
Collier certainly makes it look easy, despite her clients' wild requests (she jokes that the hardest part of filming was "figuring out how to keep my lace wig down in the Texas heat"). Her personality (and her sense of style) immediately jump out in Extreme Buyers Club. She jokes with her clients, makes expressions at the camera and gets scared on a ghost hunt. ("I probably peed on myself just a little bit. It was so scary.")
"What I really love about this show and this opportunity that HGTV has given me is that I get to be every part of Noel," Collier said. "I get to be compassionate Noel, empathetic Noel, funny Noel, off-the-cuff Noel, real estate expert Noel … I get to be the components that make me, me. I don't have to be one dimensional."
Besides that, she also gets to show another side of Houston and Texas that HGTV viewers might not always see, or certainly expect.
"When people think of Houston and think of Texas in general, they think, what, cowboy, cowgirl, cowboy hat, right? We're so much more than that," Collier said. "I love Houston and I love Houston's culture, and I'm so excited for the world to see that we're not just cowboys and cowgirls."
Extreme Buyers Club premieres Tuesday, July 21, at 8 p.m. CT on HGTV with episodes streaming the next day on HBO Max and discovery+.
