As the Abington Police Department marks a major milestone, the department says it is blending tradition with modern technology by upgrading a key behind-the-scenes system at headquarters.
“As the Abington Police Department celebrates 125 years of serving our community, we're proud to continue investing in the future while preserving a piece of our history,” the department announced, explaining that it is “installing a new electronic key management and tracking system, replacing the original manual system that has served the department since our headquarters opened in 2008.”
While the new system is a practical step forward, the department emphasized that the change also became a rare chance to capture a moment in time. The key tracking setup, it said, is “one of the many behind-the-scenes tools that helps keep our officers equipped, accountable, and ready to respond,” and removing the old system opened up space, literally, for a tribute.
"Before the old system was removed and the wall was closed for another generation, current members of the Abington Police Department had the opportunity to sign the inside of the wall,” the announcement read, calling it “a hidden reminder of the men and women who served during our 125th Anniversary year.” The department also revealed that a 2026 time capsule is being sealed inside the wall to preserve a snapshot of today’s APD for future officers and residents.
“Nestled inside the wall is also a 2026 time capsule, carefully assembled to capture a snapshot of today's APD,” the department said. The capsule includes an official 2026 department photo, the current roster, uniform patches and badges worn by today's officers, along with an original X26P TASER that served the department from the early 2000s until its retirement this year. Other items mentioned range from K9 Sgt. Harlow trading cards and biography to a125th Anniversary commemorative pin, the 2026 Annual Town Report, a letter from Chief John Bonney, a 2026 penny, and even an Abington Celebrates puzzle.
“Small items that together tell the story of who we were and the community we proudly served," explains the announcement. “One day, someone will open that wall again,” APD stated. “When they do, they'll discover more than a collection of memorabilia. They'll uncover a snapshot of the Abington Police Department during a milestone year in our history, a department that embraced new technology, honored its traditions, and remained committed to serving the Town of Abington with professionalism, integrity, and pride.”
The announcement closed with a forward-looking toast: “As we celebrate 125 years of service, we're excited for what lies ahead while leaving behind a small piece of our story for those who follow. Here's to the next 125 years.”
