The biggest question for the Minnesota Vikings heading into the upcoming NFL season is who will be their starting quarterback on Opening Day. The Vikings brought in Kyler Murray on the free agent market this offseason, but have yet to announce a starter between him and rising third-year player JJ McCarthy, who struggled in his first healthy season last year.

Recently, Vikings superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson spoke on the competition between Murray and McCarthy leading up to the season.

“I feel like it’s going to be great, one for JJ to get that competition in that room, for him to have to step up his game a little bit, and have to be that dog and come to training camp every single day with that on his mind,” he said, per Kevin Clark on X, formerly Twitter.

Jefferson also said that, “for (Murray), it’s all about coming in and being that leader that we expect him to be. With the things that he has already done in the league, we know he’s a playmaker. It’s just about coming to this team with that leadership role… I feel like it’s going to be a great battle.”

Jefferson confirmed that he believes the quarterback position could go either way at this point in time.

As the old saying goes, if a team has two quarterbacks, it really has zero, and Vikings fans are hoping that’s not the case this year on the heels of a frustrating 2025 season in which they still managed to squeeze out an above-.500 record. At this point, most pundits seem to think Murray is the frontrunner to land the starting job, but clearly, the Vikings are going to see how training camp plays out before making any decisions.
