MLB rumors: Padres rival warns A.J. Preller about foolish trade gamble amid Mason Miller buzz appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The San Diego Padres could be active at the trade deadline, but nobody knows if they plan on being buyers or sellers. With just a small chance of currently making the playoffs, executives around the league are trying to get a sense of what A.J. Preller is going to do, but it’s uncertain. The one player they believe Preller should be trading is Mason Miller, according to The Athletic.
“The rival executive, by the way, believes Preller would be foolish not to trade closer Mason Miller (and no, the exec likely would not be involved in any Miller sweepstakes),” The Athletic wrote. “Relievers hold their greatest value at the deadline. Free-agent options are in abundant supply during the offseason, giving teams numerous alternatives.
“A team trading for Miller would acquire him for four pennant races. One executive who has spoken with Preller surmised that if he shops Miller, his initial ask would be at least two top-100 prospects. He would be by far the best reliever available now that Aroldis Chapman is likely to stay in Boston.”

The fact of the matter is that the Padres could get something good in return for Miller, and since they don’t have the best chance of making the playoffs, making that move would be the best idea.
MLB insider Bob Nightengale recently gave his prediction on what he thinks the Padres will do with Miller, and it’s not the worst idea.
“I think they’re going to trade Mason Miller,” Nightengale said, via Foul Territory. “And then get some starting pitching that way and some prospects.”
In the end, it’s going to come down to what Preller thinks this team is going to look like in the coming months. At the same time, he should focus on the future.
