The Philadelphia Phillies overcame an epic Mookie Betts performance to knock off the Los Angeles Dodgers Monday. They even watched Trea Turner and Bryce Harper hit personal home run history inside Citizens Bank Park.
Both Phillies power hitters achieved this rare milestone on the same night: Smacking their 200th career home runs.
The former even entered this crucial National League showdown aiming to break out of his struggles. Turner overheard some MLB Trade Deadline chatter amid his lapses at shortstop with the Phillies. However, Turner kept his head down and continued to work.
He even battled back from a pair of fielding errors early on. Turner ripped his first homer off an 87 miles per hour slider during the bottom of the second inning. He later blasted a 346-foot homer on the first pitch attempt during the bottom of the sixth. Turner faced an 84 mph changeup before sending that baseball over to left field.
Harper pounded his home run during the bottom of the seventh inning. He faced a four-seam fastball that topped 95 mph before sending the ball flying to left center field.
Philadelphia is aiming to keep up in the NL East division race. The Atlanta Braves entered the week of July 20 holding a three-game lead over the Phillies. But now Philadelphia earned a highly important late July victory in the attempt to catch Atlanta, plus stay in the MLB postseason race.
Philadelphia now improves to 56-45 overall. Once again the Phillies watched Betts smack two home runs and drove three runners home. But Harper and Turner snatched the spotlight from the multiple World Series winner.
