What began as a report of three abandoned puppies quickly uncovered a far more disturbing case of alleged neglect.

Police in Colonial Heights, Virginia say three young puppies were found crammed inside a sealed plastic storage bin, covered in urine and feces, with no food, water, or air holes. As investigators dug deeper, they discovered two more puppies had already died and two adult dogs were suffering from serious medical conditions consistent with neglect.

Sign the petition calling for a lifetime animal ownership ban for those convicted in this case to help protect other animals from similar suffering.

Three Puppies Left in a Sealed Plastic Container

The investigation began around 1:30 a.m. on April 5, when Colonial Heights Police responded to a report of abandoned puppies near the Wawa on Temple Avenue.

According to police, two individuals told officers they had discovered the puppies roaming near a bridge. But investigators later determined the puppies had actually been removed from a residence on Salisbury Road before authorities were contacted.

Officers found the three puppies confined inside a sealed plastic storage container. They were covered in urine and feces, and veterinarians later determined they were suffering from skin infections, developmental issues, a heart murmur, and other conditions consistent with neglect.

The puppies were immediately taken for emergency veterinary care.

A Search Warrant Revealed an Even More Heartbreaking Scene

The investigation didn’t end with the abandoned puppies.

When authorities executed a search warrant at the Salisbury Road residence several days later, they discovered two adult female dogs in urgent need of veterinary treatment.

Even more devastating, officers also found two dead puppies, believed to be from the same litter as the three survivors.

The five living dogs were transported for emergency medical care while investigators gathered evidence from the property.

Four People Now Face Criminal Charges

Police have charged four individuals in connection with the investigation:

  • Lauren Ashleigh Farrar, 34
  • Benjamin Douglas Farrar, 36
  • Shawna Leigh Keyser, 23
  • David Preston Nichols, 23

Lauren Farrar and Benjamin Farrar each face felony animal cruelty charges along with multiple misdemeanor charges that include animal abandonment, deprivation, and related offenses. Lauren Farrar also faces charges related to exceeding the legal number of companion animals allowed at a residence and failing to vaccinate dogs and cats.

Keyser and Nichols have been charged with obstructing justice, animal abandonment, and animal cruelty-related offenses.

Authorities are also asking anyone who may have received a puppy from these individuals—or anyone with additional information—to contact Colonial Heights Animal Control.

Sign the petition urging authorities to seek a lifetime animal ownership ban if those responsible are convicted.

These Puppies Deserved Better

For the three surviving puppies, rescue came just in time.

But for the two puppies that investigators found dead, help arrived too late.

Animal advocates argue that cases involving repeated neglect and multiple animals raise serious concerns about allowing offenders to own animals again in the future. Supporters of the petition believe a permanent prohibition on animal ownership, if legally available following conviction, would help protect other vulnerable pets from enduring similar suffering.

No puppy should begin life trapped inside a sealed plastic container—or die because of alleged neglect.

Sign the petition calling for those convicted in this case to be permanently barred from owning, living with, or working with animals, helping protect future animals from the same fate.
