Two police dogs died in a hot patrol SUV. Now the public is demanding answers.

Rip and Boomer dedicated their lives to protecting their community.

Rip, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois trained in narcotics detection, and Boomer, a 6-year-old Springer Spaniel trained in explosive detection, faithfully served with the Salem County Sheriff’s Office in New Jersey. But on May 29, their years of loyal service ended in tragedy after prosecutors say they were left inside a county-issued K-9 SUV for approximately seven hours without air conditioning.

Now, a criminal case has been filed—and a growing petition is calling for sweeping reforms to help prevent another tragedy like this from ever happening.

Two K-9 Partners Never Made It Home

According to prosecutors, K-9 handler Cody Henderson allegedly left Rip and Boomer inside his patrol vehicle from approximately 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on May 29.

Authorities say the SUV was turned off and lacked proper ventilation on a day when temperatures reached approximately 81°F (27°C).

A necropsy later determined that both dogs likely died from hyperthermia and heat stroke.

Experts have long warned that temperatures inside a parked vehicle can rise rapidly—even when outside temperatures seem relatively mild. Within an hour, the interior of a vehicle parked in the sun can become dangerously hot, creating life-threatening conditions for both people and animals.

Prosecutors Allege Multiple Safety Failures

The criminal complaint alleges there were several opportunities that could have prevented the tragedy.

According to court documents, the vehicle had reportedly experienced an air-conditioning leak, nearby kennels were available where the dogs could have been safely housed, and an emergency heat-alert system designed to warn the handler if temperatures inside the vehicle became dangerous was reportedly functioning—but was “presumably turned off.”

Prosecutors have charged Henderson with multiple offenses, including:

• Animal cruelty
• Failure to provide necessary care to a living animal
• Unlawfully restraining an animal in dangerous conditions

He has been placed on unpaid leave and is scheduled to appear in court later this month.

The charges remain allegations, and Henderson is entitled to due process as the case proceeds through the courts.

A Community Mourns Rip and Boomer

When Rip and Boomer first died in May, members of the community mourned the loss of two highly respected working dogs.

The Salem County Sheriff’s Office described them as dogs who “exemplified the highest standards of service, loyalty, and dedication.”

Rip spent his career assisting narcotics investigations, while Boomer specialized in explosive detection. Together, they worked alongside deputies to help keep their community safe.

Their deaths have left many asking how two experienced police dogs could perish under circumstances that prosecutors now say were preventable.
