There’s no denying the Jersey Shore’s reputation has taken a few hits over the years, but these days it seems it’s finally getting the kind of attention it deserves. Recently, a fresh crop of design-forward hotels and restaurants have popped up along the Garden State’s seaside strech, attracting New Yorkers looking to escape the summer heat; among the buzzy newcomers making waves is Hotel Albatross.
The 27-room hotel, which is located in the seaside town of Ocean Grove, just under a 90-minute drive from Manhattan, opened last summer. Originally a Victorian mansion built in 1881, the new and improved property underwent a thoughtful renovation by Mapa Mueller, an award-winning interior designer who has worked with brands, including Equinox and Fairmont. The reimagined space is replete with sleek and functional design elements (think: rainfall showers and foldable desks in rooms), along with elevated amenities, like an in-house café, an electric shuttle, bicycle rentals, and complimentary beach badges.
“Hotel Albatross offers a distinctive blend of historic preservation, thoughtful design, and personalized hospitality,” Dominick Perrier-Strang, the brand’s director of hotels, tells Town & Country. “The building is from 1881 and we're not hiding that; the bones are the whole point. But the experience inside feels current, a little playful, and genuinely comfortable in a way that older properties sometimes forget to be.”

What do you consider to be the best room at the property and why?
The Julian Suite. Found on the first floor, this is our most luxurious accommodation. At 460 square feet, the Julian Suite features a king sized Serta mattress with luxe linens, an eat-in kitchen with a refrigerator, farmhouse sink, microwave and stovetop, and a private bathroom featuring oversized rainfall shower and bath amenities from Salt & Stone. The pet-friendly room also has an open closet with a safe, electric kettle and Maiden Coffee pour-over kits, and comes equipped with a 65" HDTV in the living room & sleeper sofa to comfortably sleep two additional guests.

Hotel Albatross attracts travelers who appreciate thoughtful design, local culture, and a slower pace of luxury. Our guests range from couples escaping the city for a weekend, to creative professionals, food lovers, and Jersey Shore regulars looking for a more elevated experience. The vibe is relaxed, stylish, and unpretentious, a place where Victorian history, contemporary design, and coastal charm come together in a way that feels both nostalgic and fresh.
What are the best things to do at the hotel?
One of the greatest pleasures of staying at Hotel Albatross is simply settling into the rhythm of Ocean Grove. Guests can start their morning with a specialty coffee and pastry in the lobby, borrow a complimentary bike and explore the neighboring towns, spend the day at the beach with included badges and chair setups, or relax on one of our porches and take in the ocean air.
One of our favorite offerings has become the unique culinary programming we offer on a rotating basis. This summer, we’re transforming the porch into a rotating stage for some of the region’s most exciting food concepts, launching a weekly pop-up series, dubbed Albatross Après, that brings a steady stream of buzzy collaborators to Ocean Grove. Each residency offers a new reason to stop by, whether for a casual bite, a weekend hang, or a taste of something typically found miles away.
What feeling about the Jersey Shore do you hope to impart to guests?
We hope guests leave with a renewed appreciation for a side of the Jersey Shore that feels authentic, creative, and deeply rooted in history. Ocean Grove has a timeless quality to it, genuine history and character, a pace that actually lets you exhale. Hotel Albatross was built to meet that energy and add something new to it, a fresh eye on a place that's been quietly remarkable for over 150 years. Above all, we want guests to feel relaxed, inspired, and connected, to the place, the people, and the slower pace that makes this stretch of coastline so special.
What’s a local attraction that you always recommend?
Start with sunrise on the boardwalk. The town is slowly coming alive, the light is incredible, and you'll understand immediately why people have been coming here for 150 years. From there, wander around. Ocean Grove has more Victorian homes per capita than anywhere else in the country, lining streets that feel frozen in time. Grab a coffee from the hotel, then hop on a bike and ride over to Asbury Park, where you’ll see how just five minutes apart can create such a different sense of place. Each town makes the other one better. Together, Ocean Grove and Asbury Park offer one of the most unique combinations of historic seaside charm and contemporary culture anywhere on the East Coast.
