Now, thanks to new comments from the cast of The Odyssey, the chair discourse is back.
Why Is the Christopher Nolan Chair Debate Back?
Six years after the original discussion, the debate has found new life during The Odyssey‘s press tour.
During an appearance on Royal Court, Anne Hathaway and Matt Damon were asked about the “commandments” of working on a Christopher Nolan set. Damon was quick to joke, “Thou shall not sit down. There are no chairs on set.”
The pair also joked about another one of Nolan’s alleged dislikes: Ugg boots. After Hathaway mentioned the footwear, Damon added, “He hates Uggs! I think they just symbolize leisure in a way he’s not comfortable with.”
While the exchange was clearly lighthearted, Damon’s remarks immediately reminded fans of Hathaway’s now-famous 2020 comments about Nolan’s on-set preferences, reviving one of Hollywood’s longest-running behind-the-scenes debates:

The chair debate dates back to 2020, when Anne Hathaway shared a behind-the-scenes detail about working with Nolan during a virtual interview with Hugh Jackman for Variety.
While reflecting on her experiences filming The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar, Hathaway explained that Nolan did not keep chairs around the video village area of his sets. She recalled the director’s reasoning as simple: “If you have chairs, people will sit, and if they’re sitting, they’re not working.”
The comment quickly spread across social media, where many interpreted it to mean Nolan had banned chairs from his productions altogether. While some fans admired the director’s seemingly all-business approach, others questioned whether such a rule would be practical (or even fair) for the cast and crew.
As the discussion gained attention online, Nolan’s representatives stepped in to clarify the situation.
