ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – St. Petersburg police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 47-year-old municipal employee that occurred shortly after noon in the 4100 block of 12th Avenue South.
Officers responded to a call of a person shot at 12:34 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered the victim inside her front-end loader work vehicle. The victim, a mother of four, was a 12-year sanitation technician for the City of St. Petersburg.
According to investigators, the victim and the suspect were known to each other, and the shooting was a targeted attack.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene and drove south. Florida Highway Patrol troopers later located the suspect traveling on Interstate 75 southbound in Lee County. Following a standoff involving FHP troopers and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect was taken into custody.
City officials confirmed that grief counselors will be made available to assist municipal employees.
