Marvel fans finally have a first official look at Robert Downey Jr. as archvillain Doctor Victor von Doom.

Ahead of a big Marvel showcase at San Diego Comic-Con this week, the studio went public with a new Avengers: Doomsday trailer. Teases began rolling out on Sunday night when the official social account for Fantastic Four released an altered clip from the movie.

“How long do we have?” Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) asks Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal).

“Not long,” he replies.

Until now, Marvel kept the grand character unveiling from the public eye, only showing footage in the halls of CinemaCon in Las Vegas and similar industry events. Instead, the studio revealed a series of short teasers, each one focusing on a different grouping of characters.

After playing Tony Stark for 11 years in the MCU, beginning with 2008’s Iron Man and concluding with the character’s death in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, Downey re-enters the fold as Doom, the new big bad of the franchise.

The film, set to open in theaters Dec. 18, promises that “beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered,” according to a plot description.

Those universes presumably include the main Marvel universe of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the parallel reality that’s home to the Fantastic Four, and another universe that’s home to the X-Men.

Marvel Studios figurehead Kevin Feige further teased the plot in a past interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“I think people know that the story of Doomsday is inspired by a very famous comic run in which universes are colliding and earths encounter one another and different timelines encounter one another,” he said. “And in movie speak, what that allows us to do is get different casts from different franchises.”

Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier/Professor X), Ian McKellen (Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto), James Marsden (Scott Summers/Cyclops), Kelsey Grammer (Hank McCoy/Beast), Alan Cumming (Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler), and Rebecca Romijn (Raven Darkhölme/Mystique) will reprise their superhero roles from the original 20th Century Fox era of X-Men movies.

Channing Tatum, another mutant figure who debuted in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, is also confirmed to take part. Elsewhere, stars from across the MCU populate the main cast.

Repping The Fantastic Four: First Steps are Pascal, Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm/the Thing), and Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm/Human Torch).

Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Wyatt Russell (John Walker/U.S. Agent), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/the Winter Soldier), David Harbour (Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian), Hannah John-Kamen (Ava Starr/Ghost), and Lewis Pullman (Robert Reynolds/Sentry) return from Thunderbolts* (the film now known as The New Avengers).

Rounding out the cast — at least the publicly announced members — are Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man), Kathryn Newton (Cassie Lang), Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Captain America), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Letitia Wright (Shuri/Black Panther), Danny Ramirez (Joaquin Torres/Falcon), Winston Duke (M’Baku), Alex Livinalli (Attuma), Mabel Cadena (Namora), Tenoch Huerta Mejia (Namor), and newcomer Wesley Holloway in a mystery role.
