The Philadelphia Phillies seem to have a penchant for finding the most embarrassing ways to lose against the Los Angeles Dodgers. They exited the 2025 NLDS after Orion Kerkering airmailed a throw to home plate with the bases loaded despite having plenty of time to throw to first base. And on Tuesday, they shot themselves in the foot after pinch-runner Justin Crawford and JT Realmuto had a baserunning snafu that ended up dooming the Phillies.
With the Dodgers leading by just one run, 2-1, in the bottom of the ninth, the Phillies began a rally thanks to a leadoff single from Alec Bohm. After an out, JT Realmuto moved Crawford, who had since pinch ran for Bohm, to third base with a double. This gave Brandon Marsh the opportunity to be the hero. Instead, Marsh, after hitting a ground ball to third, set things in motion for a catastrophic gaffe on the basepaths from Realmuto.
Crawford strayed too far away from third base, and the Dodgers caught him in a rundown. This moved Realmuto safely to third — or so everyone thought. The Phillies catcher, upon seeing Crawford return to third, decided to return to second. Both of them were caught out, and Phillies color commentator John Kruk had the perfect reaction to this shocking turn of events.

“Oh no, JT! Oh no,” Kruk said, via Awful Announcing on X.
Realmuto, at the very least, owned up to this mistake after the game, and as a 35-year-old veteran of the sport, this simply cannot happen moving forward.
The Phillies still could’ve had a chance to win had Realmuto simply stayed at third. Derek Hill was on deck as the winning run, and a simple base hit would’ve sent the game to extra innings at the very least. But this simply was not to be. Instead, this game should stick with the entire team as a lesson moving forward, as they need to avoid making these mistakes if they were to make it all the way.
