Caleb Ferguson has a lot of reasons to be frustrated Monday.
The Cincinnati Reds reliever had a rough two-thirds of an inning of work in his team’s 8-0 loss to the Seattle Mariners. He even served up a grand slam to Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, who had one of the great seasons in MLB history for a catcher last season but has been a non-factor so far this year.
Nothing ignited Ferguson’s frustration more than a ground ball up the middle with a runner on first base in the seventh inning, though.
The chopper up the middle brought second baseman Edwin Arroyo into contact with second base umpire Bill Miller, allowing both runners to advance safely. While Arroyo was visibly frustrated, Ferguson was vocal.

The loss continued a devastating slide for the Reds, who entered the season with optimism after falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers in last year’s NL Wild Card Series. The last-place Reds had a 0.1% chance at making the playoffs as of Tuesday, and every loss — regardless of whether it includes an umpire collision — shrinks those miniscule odds.
Umpire crews work full series, which means Ferguson and Miller had a chance to cross paths Tuesday and Wednesday as well. It will be interesting to see how they handle their next exchange on the field.
