The new coffee joint opened last week, serving local coffee, handmade pastries and treats and breakfast burritos.

A new coffee shop has opened in San Luis Obispo County a few blocks away from the beach.

Dot’s Spot Coffee & Treats celebrated its grand opening on July 14 in Cayucos, with coffee served by co-owners Molly and Mike Shopshear and namesake Dotty Humphrey.

The Shopshears are not new to the business scene, with Molly owning Cayucos Barber and Beauty Shop and Mike owning Nelson’s Garage.

This was the family’s first food-based venture, however, with daughter Humphrey at the helm and behind the bar perfecting her latte art.

“We just noticed Cayucos was missing a hangout coffee shop, and so we thought, why not open it up ourselves?” Humphrey told The Tribune. “I also feel like it’s opened up a different window of our family, where we never really crossed business over with each other, and it’s just gone as perfect as it could. We’re really excited.”

The family had the idea to start Dot’s Spot back in December, and signed the lease for 14 N. Ocean Ave. #122 in February.

They retrofitted the spot with black-and-white checkered floors, plants and plenty of polka-dots.

“We wanted to create a space that really felt like Cayucos to us,” Molly Shopshear told The Tribune. “Preserving, having places that are super community-oriented while also welcoming in our recurring locals, people that visit us time and time again.”

What’s on the menu at new coffee shop in SLO County?

Dot’s Spot serves Joebella Coffee in lattes, cappuccinos, mochas, all in names like the Surf A’ Latte, Abalones Americano and the Old Creek Espresso. Teas, Italian sodas and dirty sodas are also on the menu, with flavors of blue raspberry, cotton candy, watermelon and lavender.

The coffee shop’s drink specials include the Cayuki cold brew with marshmallow fluff, the mermaid dust lotus, a plant-based energy drink with glitter and the hai’hai’s sunkiss matcha, which is a raspberry matcha lemonade.

“Everything’s organic,” Humphrey said. “We’re doing organic syrup, sugars, milk, coffee. I feel like our dirty sodas and Italian sodas are also going to do really good, though those might not be organic.”

For grub, the shop serves MamaBirds bakery items, including a cinnamon roll, muffins, scones, quiches, breakfast burritos and a dot cake, a small cake with buttercream frosting and a full layer of dotted sprinkles.

Dolly’s Donuts in Morro Bay will also be featured at Dot’s Spot, which Shopshear calls “Dolly’s Donuts without the drive.”

“If you’ve ever had a Dolly’s Donut, you know,” she said. “The fun part about working so closely with a craft kitchen like that is we’ll be able to offer seasonal treats for holidays too.”
