Multiple rounds of strong storms dumped more than 3 inches of rain in parts of New Jersey on Tuesday, with chances for additional isolated thunderstorms today.
Montclair in Essex County had the highest reported rainfall total, with 3.56 inches, according to preliminary numbers from the National Weather Service.
Several towns in Morris, Passaic and Sussex counties also recorded at least 3 inches of rain during Tuesday’s severe thunderstorms.
The latest soaking came just three days after multiple towns recorded more than 3 inches of rain on Saturday, sparking flash flooding and cars stuck in high water in several areas of the state.
Weather officials are also investigating two reported tornadoes in Morris and Sussex counties, along with a possible waterspout that came onshore and may have become a tornado in Cape May Point.
Additional thunderstorms are expected between 2 and 8 p.m. on Wednesday, but they are not forecast to be as widespread as the storms on Tuesday.
“The severe thunderstorm risk today shifts to mainly south and east of the I-95 urban corridor,” the weather service said early Wednesday. “The risk is much lower than yesterday, however isolated severe thunderstorms with damaging winds are possible this afternoon.”
