A Newark man was convicted of fatally shooting another Newark man in 2025, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office announced Wednesday.

Wadi Brown, 34, was found guilty by a jury of first-degree murder and second-degree weapons offenses on July 16, authorities said.

On May 10, 2025, Brown and Keion Alston, 20, were walking around the corner from Bergen Street onto Harding Terrace in Newark when they allegedly got into an argument. Brown then fired six shots at Alston, killing him, according to the prosecutor’s office.

“While nothing can bring Keion Alston back, we hope this verdict provides his family with a measure of closure and justice,” Assistant Prosecutor Meredith Mona said after the verdict.

Mona and Assistant Prosecutor Sarah Simon tried the case before Essex County Superior Court Judge Patrick Arre.

Brown is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 17. He could face 30 years to life in prison.

An attorney representing Brown did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The death of 78-year-old Ann Widdecombe should cause both ends of the political spectrum to recoil in horror and sadness.
