The newest crime drama series to debut on MGM+ had a strong opening, quickly becoming the No. 1 TV show that was streaming on the platform. Less than a week later, it's been overtaken by another hit show that recently wrapped up its penultimate season.
The Westies, starring Titus Welliver and J.K. Simmons as two longtime friends now operating on opposite sides of the law, recently dropped its series premiere on MGM+. After initially holding the top spot for the platform's available TV shows, it dropped to No. 2, via FlixPatrol. The horror mystery box show From, which concluded its fourth season on June 28, has risen back up to become the most popular show streaming on MGM+.
The Westies Battles With From for the Top Spot on MGM+
Of course, the fight to the top of the mountain isn't over just yet. Only the first three episodes of the debut season of The Westies have been made available, with new installments dropping on a weekly basis. The series might continue to pick up more viewers as it progresses. Other viewers might even be waiting for all eight episodes to drop so they can be binge-watched without any waiting from week to week. That may even be why From is seeing another surge weeks after concluding Season 4.
The Westies is set in the 1980s in Hell's Kitchen, New York. Welliver plays an NYPD officer while Simmons portrays the leader of the Westies, a criminal gang. The reception to the show has been decent, for the most part. It holds an approval rating of 71% on Rotten Tomatoes. CBR's Chris La Vigna referred to the show as "prestige mob TV at its best." As noted, it also debuted as the No. 1 show on MGM+ just one day after its premiere, holding onto that spot until From once again took the lead.
From Will End With Season 5
From, meanwhile, has been highly acclaimed. Season 3 has a 100% score, while all of the others have been almost just as high, including a 96% rating for Season 4. As more fans have found the series, it has continued to grow more popular during its run. However, the fifth season, which is now in production, is going to serve as the last. The good news is that the tentative plan for the creative team has been for From to last five seasons, and they are heading into Season 5 with the goal of finally answering all of the big questions that have been posed since the show debuted in 2022.
The show has been compared to Lost, given that it similarly takes place in a mysterious location where residents cannot leave, thanks to supernatural mysteries that keep them there. Executive producers Jack Bender and Jeff Pinkner both worked on Lost before From. Actors Harold Perrineau and Elizabeth Saunders have also appeared on both shows.
From and The Westies are streaming on MGM+.
