A homicide suspect wanted out of St. Petersburg was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon following a pursuit and standoff on Interstate 75 in Lee County, authorities said.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers received a “Be On The Lookout” alert around 12:30 p.m. regarding a suspect involved in a St. Petersburg murder who was also reported to be suicidal. Troopers located the individual driving in Lee County and attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver refused to stop, sparking a pursuit.

Troopers executed a PIT maneuver near Exit 128 at Alico Road on southbound I-75 to bring the vehicle to a stop.

Following the maneuver, the driver refused orders from law enforcement and barricaded himself inside the car. Troopers alongside Lee County Sheriff’s deputies surrounded the vehicle, established contact with the suspect, and ultimately brought him into custody.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. No law enforcement officers were injured during the encounter.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has arrived at the scene and will investigate the use of force during the arrest.

“State Troopers and law enforcement officers put themselves in harm’s way every day to protect the people of this great state,” FLHSMV Executive Director Dave Kerner said in a statement. “As this is an active criminal investigation, we will have no further comment, except to say how thankful I am for the heroism State Troopers display each and every day, including this very challenging and dangerous incident today. The entire Florida Highway Patrol is deeply thankful for the heroism and support Lee County Deputies provided in responding, as well.”

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the suspect or additional details surrounding the St. Petersburg homicide investigation.
