ESPN has officially parted ways with former NFL MVP quarterback Cam Newton as part of massive layoffs company-wide following the network’s integration of NFL Network assets. Newton was a primary debate partner for Stephen A. Smith on “First Take” since late 2024.
Reportedly, Newton, along with Ryan Clark and Karl Ravech, were among the high-profile casualties of this layoff cycle.

“He was awful anyway,” a fan reacted. “His takes were trash and his memories delusional.”
“Finally cleaning house,” another fan wrote. “ESPN might be watchable again.”
“Damn I didn’t think espn had all this in them. Getting rid of the race baiters might make it all watchable again,” one wrote.
“To be fair and show that I’m not racist after the Ryan Clark firing I am actually happy about this one,” another fan wrote.
“ESPN really just cut Cam Newton? The one guy who actually brought energy to their studio. Wild decisions man,” one wrote.
“GOOD HE WAS NOTHING BUT A CLOWN ANYWAY,” another reacted.
In addition to Newton, longtime ESPN analyst Ryan Clark was also let go. Apparently, Clark was told of the decision while being live on the network. He was pulled from it and didn’t come back for the final 10 minutes of the segment. Tom Pelissero and Karl Ravech, along with others at the NFL Network, also got the boot by the network.
On the surface, these cuts seem to be due to operating costs. In February, the NFL took a 10% stake in ESPN, a deal that made NFL Network and NFL Red Zone part of its operations. This is round two of layoffs this year. Back in the spring, around 30 people were let go, who mostly comprised behind-the-scenes operators.
