Detroit Lions rookies reported to the Meijer Performance Center in Allen Park, Michigan, on July 25, veterans reported on the 28th, and the first practice is scheduled for the 29th. One injury to monitor throughout the summer is Sam LaPorta. LaPorta suffered a season-ending herniated disc in Week 10 against the Washington Commanders that required surgery. The Pro Bowl tight end was limited to non-contact drills during OTAs and mandatory minicamp.
If LaPorta is not ready for training camp, the Lions can place him on the active/PUP list, and he will still count toward the 90-man roster. In this scenario, he can return to practice at any time and be activated from the PUP list once he passes a physical. If he is not ready for the start of the season, the team can revert him to the reserve/PUP list during roster cuts, sidelining him for at least the first four games.
The Detroit Lions give a major injury update on a 1x-Pro Bowler
According toJeremy Fowler of ESPN,Sam LaPorta was medically cleared earlier this month. Tim Twentyman of the team’s website noted that the Pro Bowl tight end is expected to be a full go for training camp. However, Fowler added that the Lions will determine LaPorta’s level of involvement during the summer and will likely ease him back in.
“He missed nine games last season after suffering a back injury in a win in Washington Week 10 that ended up requiring surgery and ending his season. His rehab looked to be ahead of schedule this spring as he took limited part in OTAs and minicamp and is expected to be full go by the start of training camp,”Twentyman said.
