The Cleveland Browns needed to address their outside cornerback depth this offseason after losing Martin Emerson Jr. to the New Orleans Saints. Emerson’s departure leaves D’Angelo Ross, undrafted free agents Nate Evans and Michael Coats Jr., and former undrafted free agent Tyron Herring vying for the top backup job. Ross has started just three games across his seven-year career and logged only 19 defensive snaps in 2025. Meanwhile, Herring, Evans, and Coats have yet to play a regular-season game.
The Cleveland Browns landed a cornerback who sat out 2025
According to Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN, the Browns have signed former Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers cornerback Damarri Mathis. The former Broncos fourth-round pick from the 2022 NFL Draft brings plenty of experience, totaling nine pass deflections across 43 games, 18 starts, and over 1,300 defensive snaps. Mathis now has the most experience among the outside cornerbacks aside from starters Denzel Ward and Tyson Campbell.
In a corresponding move, Cleveland released Dom Jones with a failed physical designation.
Here’s a quick review of his past two seasons
Damarri Mathis lost the starting cornerback job to Riley Moss heading into the 2024 season. He suffered an ankle injury in the third preseason game, leading the Broncos to place him on injured reserve, sidelining him for the first six games. Upon returning, Mathis was relegated to special teams but did start in Week 16 and finished the year with three tackles and one pass deflection across ten games, one start, and 80 defensive snaps.
Damarri Mathis competed for a roster spot heading into the 2025 season. The Broncos waived him during roster cuts, and the Carolina Panthers claimed him off waivers. Unfortunately, Mathis suffered a season-ending ACL tear during practice in early September. He is currently ten months removed from the injury.
