Between their emotional stories, high-octane fight sequences, and memorable characters, superhero projects provide fans with all kinds of entertainment, but one aspect of these movies and TV shows that is always a highlight is the vibrant costumes. Whether it's a perfect adaptation of an iconic comic suit or a completely original design, these live-action outfits are eye-catching more often than not.
While the MCU's next release is gaining hype for all kinds of reasons, Spider-Man's comic-accurate suit in Brand New Day already has fans buzzing, showing just how much power these factors hold. Sure, it's unlikely that a hero's costume will make or break a production, but it's clearly a draw for viewers and gets them talking.
Some naturally fall below expectations, while others earn plenty of praise, but there are a few exceptions that stand out as truly perfect choices. As a result, these costume designers can hold their heads high as they created some of the best live-action superhero suits of all time, and they're definitely worth admiring all over again.
Spider-Man (The Amazing Spider-Man 2)
Of the three main live-action iterations of Spider-Man, there is yet to be a bad suit, as both Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland have been treated to some stunning costumes. However, Andrew Garfield's version of the web-slinger had the best threads by far, especially in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
The slick, polished design blended a comic-book style with a more modern look, allowing the colors to really shine every time Peter Parker suited up. Even though fans are divided on the movie overall, it's easily the best Marvel's flagship hero has looked on the big screen, and set an impossibly high bar for the MCU to clear.
While Tom Holland's version of the hero has had some fun and unique Spider-suits, they pale in comparison to Garfield's, which is one of the many reasons people want Sony to produce The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Maybe this film would give us an even more visually appealing Spider-Man, but until then, TASM 2 remains on top.
Ms Marvel (Ms Marvel)
Iman Vellani's Ms Marvel has become a real fan favorite among a section of the MCU audience, and her debut outfit is still one of the best-looking to hit live action. It captures her youthful charm and admiration of Captain Marvel, while also looking like a clean yet locally produced costume, as opposed to some fancy, professionally tailored suit.
Kamala's mask also adds a lot to the simplicity yet effectiveness of her mother's creation, making Marvel's decision to get rid of it in 2023's The Marvels feel rather disappointing. Her new design simply lacks that same punch and authenticity that her appearance in Ms Marvel had, making me hopeful they'll change back whenever her next appearance comes along.
A new upgrade could potentially improve upon the 2022 show's costume, but given how vibrant and meaningful the original was, that will be a tall task. Therefore, it's hard not to appreciate this genius superhero outfit, and it certainly deserves its place among the best live-action costumes to grace our screens.
Deadpool (Deadpool 1-3)
Deadpool's first MCU appearance continued the tradition of giving the anti-hero great costumes in each of his movies. Something about the red and black color scheme works extremely well, and it feels like less is more in the case of Deadpool. Rather than overcomplicating his image, the lightly padded bodysuit fits Wade's personality perfectly.
While he can still feel pain, Deadpool is well aware that he can recover from his injuries quickly, hence why he doesn't go out of his way to protect himself. Unlike other masked heroes, Deadpool's head-covering is almost always on to hide his scarred face, making it all the more important that Marvel nailed his signature design, which they have in all three outings.
The swords and customized utility belt really complete the look, and it's easy to forget Ryan Reynolds is under there since the costume makes the character feel more immersive. With Deadpool being such an important character who changed the superhero genre, it only feels right that he was given such a memorable suit, which played a part in the movie franchise's overall success.
Iron Man (Marvel Cinematic Universe)
Having been the face of the MCU for the better part of a decade, it's no surprise Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man had one of the best suits in the entire cinematic universe. As Tony Stark, Downey Jr. got to dress smart and suave, but when it came to putting on his Iron Man armor, this is where the hero truly came to life.
Although the suit has been tweaked slightly over the years, it has kept a similar overall vibe that shows just how impressive Tony's creation is. Canonically, he built this technologically advanced piece of armor inside a cave, and alongside being incredibly durable and acting as a weapon, it also looks absolutely gorgeous.
Marvel became reliant on CGI to bring this costume to life in the latter years, but this didn't stop Iron Man from being one of the franchise's best-designed heroes every time he was on-screen. Sadly, we're unlikely to see a new version of these carefully crafted suits anytime soon, but that makes it easier to appreciate what we had even more.
Wonder Woman (DCEU)
It's not just Marvel that is capable of creating elite superhero costumes, as the DCEU nailed its Wonder Woman design. Fans were largely split on Gal Gadot's interpretation of the Amazonian Princess, but the first movie was universally praised by audiences and critics alike, with Diana's costume being a notable highlight.
Her lasso and shield looked great, while her armor was sleek yet empowering, managing to avoid overly sexualizing the character. The designers really struck gold at the first time of asking, hence why this look remained largely untouched for her subsequent appearances, with only a few minor tweaks taking place, mainly involving the suit getting a little darker.
Considering the DCEU did such a good job, it means James Gunn won't just have to get the actress right when it comes to Wonder Woman's debut in his DC universe; he'll also have to ensure the hero's costume is perfect. Unfortunately, even a really strong outfit is still likely to come up short when compared to this flawless live-action design.
Superman (Superman 1978)
In general, Superman's fashion sense hasn't changed much over the years. He still wears that blue and red suit with a touch of yellow and the cape to go with it, but whether you prefer Henry Cavill or David Corenswet's outfit, they were all inspired one way or another by Superman (1978).
For many fans, Christopher Reeve will always be the best Clark Kent in their eyes, and part of that is because of how natural he looked in the role. Physically and acting-wise, Reeve was a great pick, but he also had the quintessential Superman costume that is still being mimicked in some way when it comes to modern takes on the character.
Cavill's was a little darker and ditched the trunks, while Corenswet's was much more traditional other than a slightly remixed version of Superman's symbol. Still, neither feels quite as iconic as Reeve's, as his outfit was bursting with color and personality, helping create a legacy that lives on nearly 50 years later.
Black Panther (Captain America: Civil War)
There are so many aspects about Black Panther to admire, but the fact he has one of the coolest superhero costume designs in the entire genre only adds to why fans love him. He undoubtedly looked great in his solo movie, but the more streamlined version of this suit just falls short of his appearance in Captain America: Civil War.
For many, it was their first time seeing the character, and what a way to make a name for yourself. Not only did he come across as a skilled fighter and likable diplomat, but when T'Challa suited up, there were no other heroes in the entire movie quite as visually appealing, giving viewers an instant connection to one of the franchise's best heroes.
Pretty much every character associated with T'Challa has also had great MCU designs, such as Shuri's version of Black Panther, Killmonger, and Ramonda, making it no surprise the first and second Black Panther movies won Academy Awards for Best Achievement in Costume Design.
Still, it's the Civil War outfit that remains the pinnacle for the hero, making it all the more exciting to see how Black Panther's suit will look in Avengers: Doomsday after already getting a brief glimpse.
Wolverine (Deadpool & Wolverine)
The X-Men are known for their loud outfits, many of which haven't always been done justice in live-action, but Wolverine's yellow and blue costume in Deadpool & Wolverine was as perfect as it gets. It was a beautiful homage to his signature comic book image, and it really stood out despite featuring alongside another all-time great superhero suit.
Hugh Jackman has always made Logan look like the grizzled hero fans know and love, but he has often avoided colorful outfits while working for Marvel, making this one truly special. Although we only saw him in his iconic mask for a short duration, it was still more than we're used to in previous X-Men movies, and it looked fantastic.
That said, the choice to keep it for a handful of scenes also allowed Jackman to flaunt his vicious facial expressions, which is key to believing in his character. As a result, it's safe to say Marvel were bang on the money with this look, and I'd love to see a version of it return when Wolverine next features in the MCU.
