As Volkswagen’s three-row SUV, the 2027 Atlas takes direct aim at a segment packed with stiff competition from Japanese and U.S. automakers. The new second-generation model needed to arrive with the right features and the right price to stand out against the likes of the Hyundai Palisade, Honda Pilot, and GMC Acadia. Now that we know the starting price is just north of $43,000 for the entry-level FWD SE, it might be getting off on a rather heavy foot.
The Atlas SE FWD Starts at $43,135
The 2027 Atlas FWD SE’s $43,135 MSRP is $2,350 higher than the cost of the same trim in the outgoing generation. That isn’t the biggest price change, as the SEL R-Line, once known as the SEL, now starts at $53,635—$2,540 higher. The top-tier FWD SE with Technology is up $1,930 to $47,135, and the top-of-the-line AWD SEL Premium R-Line is $58,135, up $2,030 from 2026. Part of the price increase is $50 more for the mandatory destination fee, which now stands at $1,525 and is included in all prices we report.
But the 2027 Atlas Price Is Still the Middle of the Road
When you look at the top three players in the three-row SUV market, Atlas prices aren’t dramatically out of line with the competition. For example, the Hyundai Palisade SE FWD starts at $40,430, and its AWD variant adds $2,000. That makes the VW $2,705 more expensive with either powertrain. Walk over to the Honda dealer and price out the Pilot Sport FWD and AWD, and you’ll find the Atlas is $555 cheaper in FWD and $655 cheaper with all four wheels driven. If you want American power, the GMC Acadia is the next best SUV in MotorTrend’s three-row SUV ratings, but it’s also $2,460 more expensive than the Atlas in both FWD and AWD form.
It Has Better Efficiency and Power, but Not Against Its Competition
The 2027 Atlas rides on the MQB Evo platform and wears new sheetmetal. It also gets a new 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 that promises both better fuel economy and better performance than the 2026 model-year version. The fifth-generation EA888 is rated for up to 282 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, with fuel-economy estimates of 22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined for FWD models, up by 2 mpg in both city and highway driving. Adding VW’s 4Motion AWD drops the ratings to 20/27/23 mpg, a 1-mpg improvement in the city and a 2-mpg improvement on the highway and combined cycles versus the old model.
Compared with the three-row leaders, the Atlas has a huge efficiency advantage over the Hyundai Palisade FWD’s 19/25/21 mpg and edges out the GMC Acadia’s 20/26/22 mpg and the Honda Pilot’s 19/27/22 mpg in FWD form. Power, on the other hand, is where the GMC Acadia rules, as its 2.5-liter turbocharged I-4 produces 328 hp and 326 lb-ft of torque. Next comes the Hyundai Palisade, with its 3.5-liter V-6 making 287 hp and 260 lb-ft, followed by the Honda Pilot’s 3.5-liter V-6 with 285 hp and 262 lb-ft, and the Atlas brings up the rear.
What Are You Getting For Your Money?
The Atlas SE does come with a pile of standard features, including a standard power liftgate, rear sunshades, dual wireless Qi2 15-watt charging pads, three-zone climate control with new B-pillar air vents, and parking distance control. It also comes standard with LED headlights with adaptive front lighting, heated side mirrors, a 10.25-inch digital gauge panel, and a 12.9-inch infotainment display. You also get driver assist features like Travel Assist with driver-initiated lane changes and auto high-beam control.
The SEL R-Line adds full projector headlights, a panoramic sunroof, and dynamic road sign display. The SEL Premium R-Line adds 21-inch wheels, power folding mirrors, Park Assist Plus, Area View Camera, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. Both the SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line can be optioned with second-row captain’s chairs for $695.
The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas will arrive on dealer lots later this year and will be assembled at the company’s factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
